allnurses: A Nursing Community for Nurses - Nursing Faculty - Nursing Educators

Nurse educators are responsible for creating an environment in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings that facilitate student learning and the achievement of desired cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes. Recognizing their responsibility for helping students develop as nurses, Nurse Educators integrate the values and behaviors expected of those who fulfill that role by utilizing a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate student learning. Nurse educators also formulate program outcomes, design curricula that reflect contemporary health care trends, prepare graduates to function effectively in the health care environment as well as create a preferred future for nursing education and nursing practice all the while staying knowledgeable about the educational environment within which they practice and recognize how political, institutional, social and economic forces impact their role.

Can you help me (a student) formulate objectives

I am going to shadow a nurse educator and I need to come up with 2 objectives for this experience. The reason that I want to shadow her are:

To find out what it is like to prepare for clinicals.

To find out what it is like to prepare lectures for the classrrom

To find out how much work is put into grading papers while off the clock

To find out how many hours she really works every week

I am considering becoming a nurse educator and I want to know all the ins and outs of it. I am doing my research on the role of the educator and I can't believe what you guys make. That is very sad. I still want to become an educator, though, and if I do, I plan on joining the INA and ANA and make my voice heard.... NE's need more pay. My gosh, college is so expensice...and the hours you put in to get that MSN is incredible. And to get paid the same as a ADN. NOT RIGHT. NOT RIGHT.

Do any of you know of a legit website where I can find out more info about MSN educators and their role? can any of you help me formulate two objectives that I need to share with the educator that I am going to shadow. I want to knock her socks off, especially since she is a professor at my college. I have a hard time with wording the objectives. I have never done this, and I just need a little insight. The reasons that I want to shadow her are listed above, but how can I word those into objectives??

I have a student that is protesting a test item from a recent exam. Basically, the question asked the student to select all parts of the body would be involved in performing "perineal care." The students got the question "correct" if they chose genitals, rectum, and buttocks. This particular student, however, is arguing that according to the book, the definition of perineal care does not include the buttocks. If my patient had been incontinent of stool, I would hope that the peri care would involve the buttocks.

Am I wrong to expect my students to think past the knowledge level of definitions? I don't think it was a difficult question and it was certainly not meant to trick anyone. Any thoughts?

I am trying to figure out what to do with my life. I love teaching, so I have been thinking of getting a MSN in Ed as soon as I am done with my ADN to BSN program in a few months. I have 5 years of bedside nursing, and the one thing that I love about bedside nursing is being a preceptor and helping the students. But I am a very discouraged. It will cost me another 25k-ish in tuition to get my MSN, and I doubt if I will be able to work full-time during the entire 20 month program. So, when I estimate, it will cost me in total, around 38k to graduate from this program. I am OK with that because I want to teach. But, I am not happy with what educators make. Seriously. Nursing is probably the only profession where a higher education doesn't matter on the pay scale. In fact, it looks like a new grad with a ADN makes close to the same as a MSN in Ed. It is absolute nonsense. For this reason, I am thinking of getting out of nursing, and pursuing a MS in Speech Pathology. I can still teach as a SLP, make a differnece in lives, and get paid fairly for it.

I absolutly love teaching and this is where my :heartbeat is! I just want to make sure that before my hard earn money is spent on an MSN in nurse education I want to know that I can have strong career in nurse education. After I receive my MSN will I be able to find a full time instructor position? What is the typical salary?? I know it is not much but do you atleast make over $45,000? What is a 9 month vs. 12 month salary in nurse education?

I have tried to do searches and have not come up with much.
Teach me about the world of being a teacher, please. So there are 9 month and 12 month contracts, correct? How often do you get paid? Does it depend on the school?
I have worked as a clinical instructor and was paid hourly and was shocked at how low the pay was. I know I will be underpaid as a theory instructor also, so eventually when I interview for a fulltime teaching position, I want to be able to compare apples to apples and know how much of a paycut I will be taking when quitting my fulltime beside care job for teaching. When they interview, do they tell you a yearly wage?
Hope my question makes sense :)
Thanks

As of right now I am looking at Walden University and Drexel University. Both offer MSN with a focus in nurse education. Both offer great education, (I have some friends in both programs and each of them like the programs,) each give you a practicum to do student teaching, and both are online and allow you to work full time and go to school. The only difference is the price tag that comes with each program. Walden costs $18,000 and that includes your books. You take one class every 8 weeks and the school mails your books to you. In 18 months you receive your MSN. To me this seems about as low stress as it can get in receiving your MSN. Drexel costs $30,000, and that does not include your books, you take 2 classes a quarter and it may take 2-3 years depending upon how many classes you take. I read over the curriculum very carefully and it sounds like a great curriculum but $30,000?! I am just curious if working in the nurse education field, if where you receive your MSN holds a heavy weight? Or is nurse education in such a high demand for nursing instructors that as long as you hold a MSN it does not matter where you graduated. I also know that it matters what you do as a nurse. I work in critical care and am currently studying to pass my CCRN exam. I am also apart of the safety comittee at the hospital and am taking many classes to spruce up my education level. I also precept on my unit and am beginning to do charge nurse.I try to stay involve so I will become a well rounded knowledgable educator. I guess I just want to make sure I receive the best education in grad school that will benefit me and my students after I graduate.

Greetings,
I was hoping that I could get some information/suggestions.
I am an Associate Degree prepared RN who has 11 years experience in Med/Surg, Labor and Delivery, and for the past 4 years ER experience. There was a job posting at my facility for Clinical Nurse Educator with the caveat that they would hire someone with less that a MSN or BSN if you would contract and continue your college education. A fellow nurse knew of the position and recommended me. I applied.
So, my questions are: what makes a good Clinical Nurse Eductor? What skill set should you have? What kinds of things should I consider in looking at this position? Are there particular personalities that should not go into Nurse Educator role? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your responces,
