So Who Are They Hiring?

I am an RN with just over 10 years of experience in an acute care hospital setting. I have always...

I am an RN with just over 10 years of experience in an acute care hospital setting. I have always done a good, job, never gotten a negative performance review, and even gotten a few letters of commendation from former patients. However, I last worked as an RN in 2004. In the meantime, I have kept up my CEUs and taken an online accredited RN refresher program in which I achieved 98% proficiency. I recently applied at a large teaching hospital in my area that only has nine RN positions advertised on their website and was called the next day for an interview, which thrilled me to death. So today I go for the interview. My first interview was with the nurse recruiter from whom I got a really good vibe right away. She seemed really interested in me, and began explaining wage scale, benefits, etc. which I thought was really encouraging. She then called the unit supervisor of the unit for which I was interviewing and set up an on the spot interview with her. When I got into that interview, however, the unit manager kept mentioning that I hadn't had acute care experience since 2004. She asked what I have been doing since then to further my nursing career and all that I could tell her was that I have kept up my CEUs and taken the refresher course and done very well in it. She was very nice, but I just got a bad feeling about the interview, even though I acted confident, looked her in the eye, and answered every question. I kept telling myself that I am an experienced RN who cares about my patients and would be an asset to her unit. Now I have to wait to see if I "passed" that interview and can move on to the next step, a group interview in the nursing office.

This hospital has a policy in place right now that they will not hire new grads. I am an experienced RN who has been out of practice for a few years. So I guess my question is, just exactly who are they looking to hire, since they don't want new grads and the unit manager didn't seem too thrilled about me either? How many good nurses with very recent experience are out job hunting right now anyway, since that seems to be who they want to hire? If they are waiting for those kind of nurses to come along, won't they be waiting a while, since those nurses seem to already have all of the good jobs in nursing? I guess I am frustrated because I know that I am a good nurse, and I feel that I am still very competent. So much for a nursing shortage....

ETA: the unit supervisor did give me her card and wrote her personal office number on the back of it, told me to please call her with any questions at all, and mentioned that the next step, if she decided to hire me, was the group interview. Am I making a mountain out of a molehill, in the sense that if she really didn't think I was good hiring material she probably wouldn't have given me a card with her personal # on it and mentioned the next step in the hiring process? I don't know how much sleep I will get tonight, lol!

Current waitlist time at OU for Accelerated 2nd Degree ?

Hey everyone,

Hey everyone,

I'm currently working as an Interior Designer full-time and am planning on going back to school to get a 2nd degree in nursing. My mom had cancer last year and it was kind of an "A-ha!" moment for me. I've been in the process of taking my pre-requisites at OCC and will be taking A&P II next semester. My goal is to get into the Accelerated program at Oakland University, and I will be able to interview with them after the Winter semester.

I keep hearing from other students at OCC that OU is currently full up until May 2012 for any new applicants to their 2nd degree program! Is this true? Has anyone else come across this? If so, would it make sense to transfer in to OU as a traditional student versus a 2nd degree student? I mean, if it's going to take me 2-3 years before I can even get into the Accelerated program, why not go the traditional route right? What have your expereinces been with either? What would you reccomend? Can you do the Traditional route part-time, and if so, how long would that take?

Lots of questions on my end! Unfortunately, my job does not permit me to leave and go meet with an advisor as my boss is a real stickler for taking time off. Just another reason I'm leaving the interior design industry;)

I appreciate any and all feedback!

Thanks,

Christina

Hi I will be done this Decmeber with all the requirments to get into the program at Oakland Community College. I was wondering for the people who are in the program or on the wait list these questions:
*how long have you been waiting
or
*how long did you wait
and
*what your gpa is/was?

Thank you!
I just would like to know how long I will have to wait since they do not tell you how long you wait they just say it depends on your gpa.

Hello, I am a Canadian wanting to attend a BSN Nursing school in Michigan. It is quite different in Canada. You can apply directly out of high school. I've been out of high school for 13 years and I took a year of University courses nearly 6 years ago. I guess my question is what is the best route to apply? I know you have to do some prerequisite courses prior to applying but I don't know how long that will take. Should I go through a college associates degree program first? All the different info on the web is so overwhelming. Can anyone shed some light on this for me please? :o

I have been an RN for just over 19 years. I have worked on and off during that period with time off...

I have been an RN for just over 19 years. I have worked on and off during that period with time off in between to be home with my kids. I am now 44, and I would like to get back into the nursing field. My most recent job was in 2004, but I took an online RN refresher course this past summer from an accredited program and received 98% proficiency, which I am also noting on my resume'. My question is this: is 2004 recent enough, since I took the refresher course, or am I just never going to work as an RN again? I live in SE Michigan, and nursing jobs here have really dried up in the last couple of years. I keep seeing posts from new grads who are having a hard time finding a job. Does anyone know how I, an RN with a clean license of almost 20 years and almost 10 years of inpatient hospital med/surg experience would stack up in competing for a job against new grads who don't have experience but have more current schooling and are literally half my age? I have kept up my CEU's throughout my career, so that isn't an issue. I am also planning on completing my BSN, since I already have over 80 undergrad college credit hours from years ago and figure it would help me in searching for a job. At this point, I have had no success in finding anything, but I have only applied for a few jobs in NW Ohio and one in Michigan as of today.

Any thoughts? Anyone affiliated with any hospitals in the Ann Arbor/Dearborn/Downriver/Monroe area who could give me some advice or guidance?

Thanks!
