If you've ever wanted to vacation to Hawai'i, keep in mind that air fare can get expensive. Here's...

If you've ever wanted to vacation to Hawai'i, keep in mind that air fare can get expensive. Here's a tip someone shared with me. I'll share it with you. HOW TO GET FREE AIRPLANE TICKETS TO HAWAI'I

I always fly Hawaiian Airlines (HA). They're the best.
Go to their website, www.HawaiianAir.com then click Hawaiian miles. Read more info there.

Option A: BofH visa debit card
If you live in Hawai'i, and you have a checking account at Bank of Hawai'i, you can get a special visa debit card. For every $2 of stuff you buy, you get 1 HA mile. We use our card to buy groceries, stuff at K-mart stuff, pay my cell phone bill over the phone, pay our cable/internet bill over the phone, buy furniture, etc. Every time we buy something, we earn miles. BEWARE... MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT CARD, AND MAKE SURE YOU USE IT RIGHT AND YOU'RE GETTING MILES. I know a lady who had the debit card for a year, used it for a year, and then found out that she didn't have a single mile. If you live on the mainland I would suggest you DO NOT get a BofH account. It's waaaay too much hassle because they only have branches here in Hawai'i.

Option B: BofH visa credit card
If you live in Hawai'i, and you qualify, you can get a special visa credit card through Bank of Hawai'i. Last time I checked, for every $2 of stuff you buy, you get 2 or 4 HA miles. BEWARE... IT'S A REGULAR CREDIT CARD, YOU'LL GET CHARGED INTEREST, AND LATE FEES, IF YOU DON'T PAY ON TIME. SO, BE RESPONSIBLE!

Option C: BofA visa credit card
If you live on the mainland, and you qualify, you can get a special visa credit card through Bank of America. Last time I checked, for every $2 of stuff you buy, you get 2 or 4 HA miles. BEWARE... same as above... IT'S A REGULAR CREDIT CARD, YOU'LL GET CHARGED INTEREST, AND LATE FEES, IF YOU DON'T PAY ON TIME. SO, BE RESPONSIBLE!

If you're responsible with your spending, you know how to manage your money, you live on a budget and stay on the budget, you can use your BofH or BofA credit card and get free miles on Hawaiian Airlines.

How easy is it to redeem miles? Everyone I've talked to says it's easy. HA is NOT like other airlines. There are very few black out periods. There are very few restrictions. I've talked to 10 people. They say, with HA, it's easy to actually get a flight. That's why I'm posting this info here.

How many miles? Go to the website. Click Hawaiian Miles, and then find Hawaiian Airlines Flight Award Chart. Last time I checked, Mainland US (from Seattle, Portland, Vegas, Phoenix, and many cities in California) to Hawai'i, one way, 20 to 30,000 miles. It might take 2+ years to use your BofA card, and get those miles, and get a free ticket, but it may be worth it. I would rather not pay $600 for a plane ticket and have that $600 to spend on other fun stuff.

For those of you who are wondering, "How much does it cost to bring a dog, from the mainland, to Hawai'i?" This is a post for you!

You can get more information at http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/aqs/aqs
Google "Hawaii dog quarantine" or "Hawaii cat quarantine."

If you're gonna live on Maui, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Karen at South Shore Vet Care in Kihei. They have a vet working there that specializes in helping people bring their dogs and cats to Maui. If you're gonna bring your animal to Maui, CALL THEM!

I am finishing my RN degree, but I just got hired as an LPN and am working as a peds nurse. I plan to work all through the rest of school until I graduate in May. I'm thinking I'll just stay at the hospital I'm at doing Peds until I'm ready to move to HI. So basically I'll have 7mo of exprience as a LPN, and then 5mo as a RN before I start to apply in HI. Do you think my LPN experience will count as my overall nursing experience, or will I have to work for an additional 7mo as an RN to be considered as having a year of experience? Anybody know?

Hi, I was just wondering what anyone's NLN exam scores were and whether they got accepted into what college based on those scores?
I know that the passing score for KCC is 95, and I think the highest you can get is 200. The KCC site says they look at 120-130, but I wanna know what real students' scores were...
Thanks!

Hi, I'm a starting freshman @ LCC, doing my pre-req's and co-req's. I've read the some threads here and at forumshawaii.net...so just to clarify, there isn't much difference in the pay level of a staff nurse if they're 2yr. RN or 4yr. RN?...however, if you wanted to get a higher position than a staff nurse, you'd need a BS?
And wouldn't you have a greater chance of getting hired if you had a BS?
Or would it be better to spend those 2 extra years working at a CNA or LPN job so that you can earn money while getting your foot in the door for the RN job?
Thanks!

They also asked me the question on the interview. I am not sure what to say, do you think $30/hr is ok to say, or is the average salary in here at the moment lower in a not hospital environment?

For those of you on the mainland, who are thinking about moving here, here's a post for you!

We live on the island of Maui. My husband is working on the island of Kauai this week. He told me that's where Jurassic Park was filmed; the island is tropical, green, gorgeous! I'm thinking about joining him for the week-end. Back home, if we wanted to take a week-end vacation, we would
$ 30 fill up my gas tank, drive 200-300 miles to another city or small town,
$ 200 hotel room for 2 nights
$ 30 fill up my gas tank, drive back home (my car was smaller, got better mileage)
That's $ 260 total + meals.

Here, in Hawai'i, it's another story. I just checked prices:

$ 260 airfare Maui to Oahu to Kauai for 2 people
$ 100 rental car for 2 days
$ 200 hotel room for 2 nights
$ 200 airfare Kauai to Oahu to Maui for 2 people
That's $ 760 total + meals

My husband is on Kauai for business already, and his company will pay for his plane ticket back home, so that will save us some money. Minus the cost of his plane ticket, it will cost $ 530 for me to join him, and us to make it a week-end vacation. Why do I write this... to let you nurses on the mainland know that Hawai'i is an expensive place to live... in more ways than you think. -- Lisa ;-)

I have read the forum and have not found answers to these questions any help would be appreciated. So here we go. Looking for an NNP job in Hawaii but all I can find is a per diem job in Honolulu. It appears there are no jobs on the other islands. So here are my questions

1. What do they do with sick babies before they are flown out to Oahu?
2. Would out islands hire an NNP to help staff the newborn nursery?
3. How often do full time NNP jobs open up in Oahu?
4. How hard would it be to commute back and forth from the Big Island to Oahu?

thanks
