I have a few questions about the ESN and new grad program offered by Fraser Health/Coastal Health/PHSA for people who've participated. If anyone could enlighten me it'd be greatly appreciated!

1/ The ESN program: is there a maximum or minimum time you have to work for the hospital? I'm thinking of applying for the summer (2 months) but I'm not sure if they would hire someone for such short period of time.

2/ The ESN program: do you get to choose which specialty or is it strictly med/surg?

3/ The New Grad program: again, do you get to choose a specialty? And if anyone can just briefly explain how the program works it'd be great.

That's it for now. Thanks in advance!

I have failed my CRNE written on Oct. 7, 2009. I did worst the second time around than the first time. I even took prep courses that I didn't take the first time and I also had the CNA prep guide and the Mosby's Prep Guide bought for the first time I wrote the exam. I did everything I can think of and I thought I would pass the second time around, but to my dissapointment I did even worst!

I am starting to question whether I should continue to pursue the path to becoming a nurse. I am currently in debt due to student loan, unemployed and starting to have financial difficulties. I honestly cannot think of what else I can do to become more prepared than I have the last time...without going broke and spending hundreds on prep courses...the CNO suggested that I take a prep course with one of the Universities, but I am not sure which ones are sufficient to guarantee me to pass. I do not trust those courses...either they're after your money or they're reiterating what is already available to read in any prep guides.

The length of time it took to receive the results was way too long and I was in agony...All the waiting is making me feel less qualified...I am starting to lose hope in becoming an RN...

Anyone on here work in the community? in the community after working at the hospital? any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Put yourself in my shoes. Go for nursing or not?

I posted this in general nursing a month or so ago and got no feedback so I thought going more...

I posted this in general nursing a month or so ago and got no feedback so I thought going more local would help.

So my story is that I'm a 29yr old male, married, homeowner, 2 dogs and no kids yet, now for the last 18months or so I've had my heart set of nursing school and had been slowly working on the prereq's to even apply for school, 3 almost down and 3 more to go. I was passionate about it and happy that finally I could pursue a career that I wanted to do and not that boring office job that I needed to pay the bills. My passion for nursing gradually faded and finally about 2 months ago I was presented the opportunity to apply for a skilled trade apprenticeship job, now I never did get a callback on it, but it got me thinking. I like the trades, I like working with my hands and I'm good at it, but never considered a career in it until now.
Now this is where you put yourself in my shoes. I still want to be a nurse, the job itself focuses on many of my values mind the shift work, but the road to get there is the concern. My wife and I have a mortgage, a house that we keep dumping money into and a large $30,000 line of credit debt mostly from our home that we are slowly trying to pick away at. Financially for us to afford me in school we would need to take on 2 roomates, we have 1 now and its working great, but another one not sure, and I would have to work a part-time job. That would put us in the green, but tuition would need to be borrowed:cry: adding to our debt. After that comes the fact that I hate school, I'm not an acedemic and that can already been seen in that I hate doing my prereq courses, sure I'm doing great in them (mid 80's), but its a chore for me to do. Reading is something I have little interest in too and the idea of sitting through hours of lectures bores me. The thought of school stresses me out sometimes too. Lastly is the fact that we would like to have kids in a couple years, but we don't want to have to wait 5yrs until we can, I'll be 35 by then and all my friends are having or have kids.
Forgot to mention that I likely won't be able to have the time nor the money to keep with my love of mountain biking, that is a big bummer too.

In general I'm concerned that life will be hell, money will be a constant stress, no chance for a vacation or newer car or anything thats not a neccessity and unexpected expenses are going to hurt ( 2 dogs means lots of vet bills, $1500 surgery 2 weeks ago), with a part-time job and full time school I don't see there being any freetime and I worry about my marriage in the long run too. Not having the chance to start a family is a concern too and just the overall feeling that life is on hold until school is done it going to be a burden. So when I think of all that the idea of getting into the skilled trades seems like a much more attractive idea, now I realize going into that field will be no easy task, pay cuts and starting at the bottom is a concern, but its doable. My goal is just to have a job that is a challenge and keeps me out of an office environment.

So what would you do?

JOB A Case Manager
A large case management company (CCAC)-it has jobs in hopsitals and the community. They have many scheduling options. Some work M-F 0830-1630. The job I would have is Tues and Wed 1300-2100 and every other weekend 1000-1800. Which I dont mind while the kids are this age and in the future I could change easily. I always would work the same days. Again, there are a variety of set schedules which I could in the FUTURE choose.
It's mostly computer work and no hands on care-which I am OK with. I would need after school care for 2 days a week only.

JOB B OR Nurse
In a hospital-all surgeries are out pt surgeries. The shifts are 0730-1530 or 0800-1600 but the days are different all the time-for example it could be Mon Wed Fri or Wed Thurs Fri. The schedule does not repeat. They put you in when they need you. No weekends. No holidays, March break off, 2 wks at Christmas off and 2 weeks off in summer (not paid though as I am part time).
Working closely with docs-which can be good or bad. This job would require my kids to attend an after school anf before school program on all days I work.

Both are the same distance away. Pay is pretty similar. Both are 3 days per week.
Would you take the hopsital or CCAC?
I can live without doing hands on care.
I think I would like CCAC's low stress level.
OR in hospital has more future opportunities.
WHAT TO DO????????

Hello everyone!

I am currently a 24yr/f LPN working for a year now on a surgery unit @ my nearby hospital here in Edmonton, Alberta. I completed the 2yr diploma program through NorQuest College and graduated in September of '08. My current dilemma is that I am very eager to continue my education process to become a RN BUT ...I do not want to go back to school here in Alberta. I have lived here my entire life and have been impatiently longing for a big change/move! So after my dream to go to school in Australia was shattered (approx $55,000 for 3 yrs tuition for LPN-RN bridging!), ive decided i want to move to British Columbia.

Soooo anywho, my question for you helpful students and nurses out there is if you know any recognized LPN-BSN in class/distance bridging schools offered anywhere in B.C.? Preferably 2yrs or less and if not 3yrs? websites/links?Program info? Also if anyone has attended Vancouver Community College? I have browsed the web for schools but what love to get some help, advice or guidance on continuing my nursing journey in British Columbia.

Thanks!

I've started reviewing (crne) and came across a question about immunization of children, that "immunization of infants does not begin until 2 months" does this mean that Hep B vaccine is not given at birth? and its only optional? and whats the best rationale for this? if this is so.
