Hi, I am in the midst of writing a careplan for a patient I had at an in-patient psych unit. One of her nursing diagnosis is self mutilation. I am having trouble thinking of interventions that a nurse would do for this patient on the unit. She generally picks at her skin and has used scalding water to burn herself and a knife to cut herself. My interventions so far include keeping unsafe objects away from her and checking on her regularly. I really can't think of anything else that would be a good intervention. Please help.

well I interviewed like a month or so ago for a job in rural ky, walked away thinking they were not interested so today I get a call asking if I was interested or not since they had not heard from me I guess the the former office manager was supposed to have called and offered a position before he left but did not. so now i am wondering if this is just a glitch on their end or they could not find any one else who was interested, when I say rural I mean rural but I really liked the area and the staff was awesome. One other thing I have already given my 2 week notice and I am really feeling crappy the greenies coming out and everything, out of my chest do I call in and risk being fired or go in and make everyone else sick ergh:imbar

Hi all,

Hi all,

I'm currently working with the staff at MDC Medical Campus to launch our first ever Sigma Theta Tau International Chapter. There are of course some guidelines to be followed. Thus, i'm seeking support from BSN nurses that are currently enrolled or have finished the program.

If you are interested please PM me your information, or if you prefer I can PM you the professor at MDC Medical that I am currently working with.

Briefly, before we can have a Sigma Theta Tau International Chapter at MDC Medical, we must first reach 50 active members of a generic nursing honor society at MDC Medical Campus.

We are interested in BSN students to help with the infrastructure of making this goal become a reality.

You will get to be the "founding members" of this organization.

One last tidbit, currently all Florida Colleges with BSN programs have a Sigma Theta Tau International Chapter in their schools. Further, the reason why MDC does not have one yet is because in order to qualify, the institution must have a BSN program. And, as many of you know, MDC is in their infancy with its BSN program. Thus, not eligible until just recently. That is also the reason Broward College does not have one, nor are they eligible at the present time.

Thank you for your support. I look forward to hearing from prospective founding members for our 1st ever STT Chapter:yeah:

I find myself getting so far behind, its nearly impossible to get caught up. I will be driving down the road, a md office will call me on my cellphone. There I am...driving with one hand on steering wheel and the other with my phone, trying to scribble down an order on a notepad, to later realize I couldnt remember which doc or which patient the call was regarding. I have so many patients with PT/INR that all I do is draw blood and try to follow up on everyone that is out of range. I am finding that I am missing more and more things and honestly I dont feel like a very good nurse these days.
I get home late, do paperwork til bedtime, just to get up in the am and do it all over again. The money is awesome, but what good is it if I cant enjoy any of it or have any kind of life. The office is even trying to tap into my weekends with admits. Do any of you ever feel this way?

:oHey everyone,

I'm thinking of applying to an accelerated program in 2011...I have an undergrad BS in Animal Science, so most of my pre-req's are complete :) I did OK in Chem and Stats, but not great... B-....but Micro and Biochem I have A's.

Now my predicament is that I took an organic chem 1 when I thought I was going pre-vet but then did reallly poorly...got a D+ :o because I sort of "gave up" half way through and just wanted to pass because I changed to from pre-vet to Animal Science. It's on my transcripts now and brought my GPA down to a 3.2...

Before I didn't care because I didn't think I would be considering grad school...Now I'm affriad schools will see the B- in Chem and then see a D+ in Orgo and question what I am capable of. Would anyone reccommend I take orgo again as part of the classes I have yet to finish before applying to an accelerated program? or not bother to make up for it because it's not listed as an individual prereq??

THANKS A MILLION!!!!!!

Anyhooz, I am sure that there have been certain days, or certain patients that just crack you up with some really very odd requests following "Can I Help You?" Would love to hear some. Just got off a 12 hr and my particular floor is considered "The Rodeo" and could use some laughs. :jester:

My wife just left for the OR for a lap choley (I dx her condition). We came in early this morning...

My wife just left for the OR for a lap choley (I dx her condition). We came in early this morning to one of our favorite two hospitals here in Bangkok...got CXR, EKG and lab. Shown to nice room which is more like a hotel room, complete with frig and safe and nice view over a garden area and water fountains. Nurses here wear white uniforms and hats. For those of you who are fashion conscious, the one who drew my wife's blood and started her IV had a nice gray silk business type jacket over her white uniform and short heels on her white shoes. Out in the ward lobby area by the nurses station is an organizational chart complete with all the staff photos. I've perused the room service menu, complete with pictures and have my lunch picked out. The aide bought me my choice of Bangkok newspapers when we checked in and I'm enjoying wifi in the room, although there are two computers with free internet across from the nurses station. I saw a nurse this morning in the hall stocking the meds in each patient room through a locked door in the wall. Nurses can then access the meds from within the room with their key. I'd been meaning to check and see what the average nurse salary was here and found out it's $33-35,000 USD. Anyway, thought you guys might be interested.

How could you pass fundamentals, med/surg etc.. and not know how to calculate a patients intake?...

How could you pass fundamentals, med/surg etc.. and not know how to calculate a patients intake? one of my classmates and i were discussing intake for one of her patients when she asked me "how do you do that"? well, i was thinking she was talking about the intake/output sheet on where to put in the numbers. i showed her where to put it in. she says no how do you figure how much they drink with their meals? i'm like huh? let me add, this conversation was taking place in front of one of the CNA's at our clinical site. i told her how many ounces the juice glasses were and you multiply that by 30mls. she's listening and says "did we go over that"? i said YEAH and were where you during the first trimester? omg.... this girl is sooo not ready to be a nurse. i found out from her that she's barely passing exams and she's made it this far because of the low passing score, only a 74% needed to pass a course, and projects thats worth almost more than the exams. i've also noticed that she askes questions that we should automatically know like what does aspirin do? duh everything under the sun it's a analgesic, anticoagulant, antipyretic. she's always asking what is this or what is that, did we learn this? i understand that it's impossible to know everything about nursing but by this time you should know enough that you are confident and a safe nursing student. i am so mad that my school is letting her and others pass by a tiny % because they've done those stupid projects.

how is it in your lpn or rn program do you all have a ton of worthless projects to do?
