Getting a part-time job as a new LVN

Hi folks -

I'm thinking of getting my LVN.

Due to some unique circumstances - I have too many college units in the CC system (in general ed coursework and in my prior major) and am going to lose my student aid in another semester because of it. However, I have very few pre-RN requirements, so I'd have to pay out of pocket for the next year and a half to go pre-RN. Not to mention that I'd have to rely on the CC lottery system because my grades are not competitive (undiagnosed ADHD for most of my school career).

It seems that getting my LVN may be the best way to go for me, and I could work my way through school as an RN after having my LVN.

I know that there aren't the ideal jobs available, but presently I work as a caregiver and if you told me I wouldn't be doing the same job, or at least making the same wage, a year from now... I would be all over that :)

The question I have - is if there are part-time LVN jobs in California. I live in Sacramento presently which has a horrid economy, and am having to move back to the Bay Area because I've already tapped out the entire home health clientele base here... my roommate has the same situation as an LVN and is also having to move. Also, can you get benefits as an LVN?

I have time to think about it first, since I am going to get my CNA before I do anything.

I know that there are other allied health jobs I could do (medical assistant, lab tech), but they might involve putting time into training without it counting toward my RN, as an LVN would.

hello to all....i am feeling very very dumb and not a very good nurse......first all i work in a home type setting with 12 very medically involved frail mentally and physically challenged individuals....they often have dr appts thru out the work week and people always are asked to sign up to take them for extra or overtime.....well on this particular day i went into work for my regular hours of 6am-10am(PT HRS).....so at about 9am the supervisor of the house(not a nurse)came up to me and asked if i would go with her to take so and so in for an upper GI......sure i said,i was there, they were stuck as the nurse who signed up didnt show.....ok...so i get his AM meds and flush(he has a jtube) ready to go....we get there.....they can not do the upper GI in his wheelchair, they can not find a hoyer....after about 30 mins they find one,we get him on the table,i unhook his feeding, leave the room and they start the procedure........he does not take anyting by mouth so it was put thru his J tube.......i am in the lil room with the dr and he says....we wont be able to see his stomach thru his jtube....he showed mje waht he was seeing and said this test is done......he told me the dr who ordered this test knew better..........we get him back, the RN of the house was there, explained it to her....she couldnt understand why the dr said they wouldnt see the stomach as others has had this test and they always saw it.......so i leave and i get home still thinking of the test....and it hits me......THE GTUBE........he also has a gtube to empty stomach contents.....OMG!!!! how stupid i am!!! I didnt even think about that.......and i knew all along........and i told the techs in the room this is his stomach drainage....
i feel like the worst nurse ever......why wasnt i thinking!!!
thanks for taking the time to read.....

I'm just beginning to look for my 1st job and I would love to know:

What would you recommend to a new LPN to make the transition from student to real world nurse easier?

Is there anything you wished you had reviewed, studied more or did before taking that first job?

I Know:
"Good Luck if I can even find a job."

I really appreciate any tips or advice.
Thanks so Much,

At a recent meeting at work..the boss mentioned that they were "toying" with the idea of putting some of us on 12 hour shifts. I myself would much rather work 12's because it would give me more time off. Basically I'd have to only work 3 days a week! The others however, are against it....the ones who work first shift. I work second. Several of us on 2nd and 3rd would be willing to do the 12's. The thing is....the ones on first who are against...are the ones who stay over til 5 and 6pm every day charting?!!!!!!!!! or piddling. Ive heard other nurses talk about how they love their 12 hr shifts. The boss said that even though they were just toying with the idea of it it would be a scheduling nightmare for her.....and Im not exactly following that. What shifts do you guys have where you work and how well does it work out?

Does anyone work in this area? I just started in an AL facility and am a new grad. I am learning alot- wish they had covered it in nursing school, cuz i think it is a great way to reinforce your knowledge. Just wondering what your thoughts, both good and bad, about this area of nursing-and how long have you been in AL nursing? Do you have another position at a different facility? I dont want to lose my skills- but i know i am gaining alot of knowledge- so theres a give and take. Considering another position along with this position just so i am working full time and a m using both my skills and my knowledge. Any who I appreciate all input! Thanks!

I am a new grad and I have been offered a part time position in a LTC facility but its only every other weekend, at least for now with a chance that I may get more hours at the end of orientation (but its not guaranteed)...my dilemma is.... although it will be great experience, the money is not what I was hoping for and I wonder if it will be too much, I would have about 19-20 residents. Is that too much for a new grad? Also what if something full time comes up in another facility during my training, what should I do? I need to let them know by tomorrow. I forgot to mention that this is a large, reputable company and a place I always wanted to work at. Any advice will be appreciated.

I'm working on a ceu about documentation legal aspects. It's terrifying! I've read about all the things nurses can get sued for ranging from falls med errors abuse and fraud. My question is this, when you find or commit a med error what exactly should you chart? Example: Jon smith is out of norvasc . You can't borrow from another and the emergency kit is out.you notify pharmacy and the earliest they can get it to you is tomorrow am his dose is due tonight at 8pm. Example 2:you think you gave a resident the wrong antibiotic dose but you can't remember for sure. What do you do . Once you fill out an error form who tells the responsible party? Ex 3:you have told the aide to be sure Jonson ppa is on as he is unaware of his unsteady gait and prone to falls the aide forgets and you are in the middle of a med pass when you get to Jon only to find him lying on the floor with an obvious fx hip and a head gash you assess him and send him to the er where he dies from complications 4 days later family sues.is the aide not held accountable for herself not following instructions given by the nurse or should the nurse have to take on full heat from this incident? Now I am paranoid about whether or not my charting is any good or. Good enough is a better word for it. My handwriting is bad, always has been and I'm always in a time crunch. I don't chart at the end of my shift, I make sticky notes and flag my mar as I go and then I chart starting at supppertime . Then if something comes up I chart it. I don't chart every pen med I give I document it on the mar unless it's a nitro or someone who never complains . Have any of you ever had to go to court before and if so why and what was the outcome for all involved?

I'm an LPN who graduated in 2007 from nursing school. I haven't worked much because of my kids (they're little & I'm a SAHM), and it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to work much until they're a little older. I'm trying to work on my RN degree part time though since I'm not able to work. I live in the state of Virginia and was wondering if I need to do anything with my license since I'm currently not working, and don't plan to for a few years... Do I keep my license active, or go on inactive status? I don't think I have to have continuing education classes in the state of VA. I've tried calling their state board in the past, and it's hard to get through to anyone to talk to...

She acts as her own vender. The pay rate is $29 hour and she writes out the checks. Is anybody familiar with this system and tax rules.

Our boss just informed us full timers that we are getting more added to our list of chores. We are going to have to take over doing the mgmts quarterly assessments because they say they don't have time to do them. And we do??? Plus they want us to go through every chart and find who is due for yrly tb tests which has ways been done by mds nurses.I think it's a load of bull. They worry with this when they let cnas do whatever they want and let them run the show which not all the aides are bad but there are a handful who make us all look bad on a daily basis. Mgmt doesn't address the actual problem areas they skate around them which causes more frustrations among employees. Yet another joy of nursing.
