hello everyone. i joined this website to check things out. Im a man and have been thinking about going into nursing for a while now. as we know nursing is a female dominated field, and thats one of the things i've been thinking about. are male nurses accepted the same as female nurses or is there any negative views about male nurse? if anyone wants to comment on this it would be very much apprechated.
thanks.

So yesterday I went to the local CC to look at a LPN to RN bridge program. The counselor said I don't have enough prereqs done to get into the program next August, so I would have to wait until 2011 to start. She suggested I get into the Respiratory Therapy program and do that until I can get into the nursing program. Has anyone done this or known anyone who has? Will it help or be a waste of time?

How to deal with a nurse that acts immature?

How do you deal with an immature nurse that is all in to gossip, twist everything around that is...

How do you deal with an immature nurse that is all in to gossip, twist everything around that is said to her so as it seems "she is being picked on", does not listen while giving report and gossips to anyone that will listen. (which is mostly the CNAS) and stomps her feet like a 2 yr old when you point out anything that needs to be done/did not get done?
She is a reccent grad and at first most of us tried to show her the "ropes" until it was clear that she was not there to learn and her priority was gossip and lies vs. patient care.
Right now it is to the point where 2 off going nurses are present when report is given do to the lies she says after....ie..we did not tell her this or we had an attitude with her. It is frustrating to know that she is the nurse you have to report off to.
The DON is aware of this and I beleive that she has talked with her but I cannot verify that. Anyhow the situation has not improved if she did.

as a student and intern i always pulled my IV pushes into different syringes, flushing between each and every one. Now I am on the floor and see nurses mix IV pushes. This would be more time effective and reduce risk of infection, but it's important to know what's OK to mix and not mix. Morphine, ativan, lasix, phenergan ect...I never mix antibiotics with anything, and believe protonix is incompatible with alot of infusions.

I have a question for those who did the LPN to RN through Excelsior recently. I was planning on taking the courses however now I am wondering if I should. An LPN who works for the same company I do just told me NOT to take the brige program through them. She informed me that she went with them, finished all the course work & was waiting to take the clinicals at the end. She said she had been waiting for more than 13 months to get a date :crying2:. She finally "gave up" & signed up for the bridge program with a local college & NONE of her classes she took with Excelsior would transfer. I would really much prefer to do a distance learning course like Excelsior as I am a bit older & very tired of all the classroom drama & dynamics. My question is for those of you who did graduate recently (past year or two) did you have to wait that long for the clinical portion? What was your experience like with Excelsior, & would you recommend them? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Is it just me or does it seem like there are many more people wanting to go into nursing now for all the "wrong" reasons? I feel like anymore everyone I hear wanting to go back to school for nursing just want to do it because they know they will have a job. I understand the economy is horrible right now, but I'm kind of getting irritating hearing all these people becoming nurses just because. Does anyone else feel this way?

Samuel Merritt ABSN 2010 Admissions - San Francisco, Oakland, San Mateo

This is a new thread for anyone that has applied to Samuel Merritt's Accelerated BSN programs in San Francisco, Oakland, or San Mateo for 2010 entry.

This is my second application for admission. San Mateo had a July 1 and Nov 1 deadline, I applied to both. I received a letter the first week in November (in regards to the July 1 deadline) that I was number 48 of 50 waitlisted. This was the first I heard from them regarding that application!! So I am pretty sure I will not be offered admission to that program. Does it seem like a long time that it takes approx 3 1/2 to 4 months to hear anything regarding admission?

I don't know if being waitlisted once will help my chances of getting into any of their other programs or not. I emailed them shortly after the November 1st deadline to find out how long before we will hear anything. And they said they will not be sending out admission offers until at least mid-February!!

I would love to hear from anyone else that has experience with Samuel Merritt's admission process especially from those that were accepted recently. Does anyone know how many applications they receive?

Hi all! I'm in a graduate entry program and for my last semester before taking the NCLEX, I've been placed on a bone marrow/stem cell transplant unit. So far I know I will be working with patients that have conditions such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, Hodgkins, non Hodgkins, aplastic anemia, and sickle cell disease. For anyone who's worked on a unit like this, can you tell me what to expect? I honestly have no idea what I'm in for! Any advice or input would be great.
Thanks!

I live in New Jersey. Im 17 years old and a senior in high school. Im looking at colleges in NJ and im not sure which has a good nursing program. My scores arent that great. I took the SAT's twice and got 1260 (tell me how thats possible!?) and my GPA is a 3.3 out of 4. Im class rank 70 out of 165 as well.

I really want to be accepted into William Paterson University because its convenient and seems to have a good nursing program. Then the other colleges I want to go to seem like such a stretch because of my bad SAT scores. I was looking at Ramapo, Georgian Court University, Richard Stockton, Fairleigh Dickinson- Metropolitan Area, and thats pretty much it. I shot down Rutgers & Seton Hall because I dont want to waste my time applying when I know I cant get in.

Do you think I have the potential to make it into any of the colleges I looked over?

Im also a bit confused about Georgian Court's system. They have a nursing program at the Women's College. What does that mean though? there are ONLY women there? that kind of sucks if you ask me because I want the men!! lol

but please give me your insight and the truth. thanks

my friend's (ill call Vanessa) Fiancé just made partner at this law firm. she tells me he make big time money. She graduated from school to be a nurse anesthetist working in trauma surgery and makes good money. They met while she was in school.
Now that Vanessa is doing her own thing, he really doesn't want her to work because of the irregular hours. she sometimes have to get up at 2 am for work. She says its getting to him and he doesn't want her to work anymore; so when they get married he'll take care of her. Vanessa said that she worked hard to get where she is at (all that time and money). Do you all think its fair she has to quit her job because he doesn't like the crazy hours? he knew what he was getting into when they met. come on she saving lives here!
