Question military spouse

Nursing Students Excelsior

Hi so my husband will be deploying for 7 months and then we might be heading overseas on PCS orders. I know that people have finished the excelsior program rather quickly and I'm just wanting to hear from people that finished quickly and passed the NCLEX-RN.. My goal would be to move over seas as an RN so that I can find good work and not have to put my career on hold!

Any help would be much appreciated :)

Good luck because my husband got orders to Japan and I spent two years out of work. I have a degree in respiratory and MBA both degrees did me no good there plus oversees GS jobs are difficult to get. Depending on where you are stationed and the need will determine if you find work. We are in Guam now and even though its a US territory I have to try to contract with the military hospital for a job....no GS positions. Anyway you go....when oversees, it will be tough.[/quote']

Thanks I figured it would be hard... That's why either continuing my education and volunteer work would be my next option... I don't want to cripple my career but I don't want to limit my family either... I figure as long as I have my RN I can accomplish the rest over there (Wherever over there may be)! What branch is your husband? Guam was one of the stations my husband had avil. I feeling like if Obama wants to save money it'll be easier moving a single airman verses one with a family, so wit all this money crunching who knows"/

My husband is in the Marine Corps but attached to the Navy base since there is no Marine Corps base in Guam. We just got here and the work opportunities are much better than Japan. Plus it's paradise and who can argue with that.

I just landed a contract position with the Naval hospital here in Guam. The position is RT but they also have RN positions so after my contract is up, I'm going to get a RN contract. Good luck with your PCS...I hope you get somewhere great.

Thanks and congrats in the position you landed...!! So did you get your RN through excelsior? How long did it take you?

I went to Excelsior.... it's a great college if you know EXACTLY what you want. Since you're military, I don't know how fees work, but it's quite costly (for an online school). Signing up for classes was always a hassle for me, but I loved the courses and my teachers were amazing! Info Lit. is easy... I finished the whole self paced course in about a week with a 99% overall avg. I would just take it from them, the trouble of getting the transcripts isn't worth it! :) Good luck!

I am not quite through with EC. I am waiting for a date for CPNE. That is the last thing left for me to do. It took me a year to complete all the nursing theory classes. I have been eligible for CPNE since Sept last year but I didn't have a valid CPR card and believe it or not....that's one of those things that you can't get overseas. I tried to get the hospital at the base to let me get re-certified but since I wasn't an employee, no go. I had to wait to get one and it delayed me applying for CPNE. Hopefully you'll get stationed somewhere, where you won't have those problems. It's great and sucks being overseas.

Thanks for the info RTFisher! I think I'm feeling the same way... I'm excited but worried and stressed at the same time"/ I guess we'll see what happens. My husband told me we won't know anything til march, so now it's just a waiting game...

Quick questions... Did you do all your tests and classes overseas? And are you flying back to the states to do the CPNE test?

Hey everyone so we just got orders to Misawa Japan. Just want some advise from EC current oversea students or EC vets. Should I start EC now? Or wait til I'm overseas? Does anyone know how doing EC from overseas works? Such as where testing sites are located? Any information would help... I just don't want all the pre requisites that I took to expire, nor to be over there without being able to find a job and doing nothing allowing my skills to wither... Please help!

Otherwise, doing EC is pretty much the same, with the exception that you won't have the option of driving to your CPNE.
