Excelsior Nursing Program?

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

Hello,

I am just wondering if anyone has any info regarding the Excelsior AAS/ADN nursing program. I had never heard of an online RN program (only RN-BSN/MSN programs). Is this program legit? It appears to be an expensive route, but wow it would be nice to be able to work a program around my schedule (I'm a stay-at-home mom).

Thanks for any info you may have. :)

fishchick, I see you're in California. Forget Excelsior. Your BON does not accept them.

they used to, that's why I know people who have done the program, I'm already an RN, not looking into it, just answering the question here......

I was a RRT and went through Excelsior for my ADN and then went on to complete my BSN through the same school. It's not easy, but it's worth it. It's a very good school.:balloons:

Only 2k to get your RN? You are very lucky, there is no program -not a single one- in my area that cost less than $10k. That 10k price? It's for 5 semesters at the highly impacted community colleges, and the 5 semester myth is just that, a myth.

The CCs print out these brochures telling students that they only need to take a few pre-reqs to be eligible for a clincial seat but that is not the truth. Once you finish the Eng, Med Math, A&P I and Chem then you will find out that they are only taking people who have finished ALL of the pre-reqs and have like a 3.7 or higher GPA. You don't get accepted for clinical and now you are stuck, finishing all of the pre-reqs adds at least 1.5 years onto your 2 year ADN, if you get a seat at all.

A BSN at a public college will cost about 16k for 4 years @ 2k per semester not including books or other needs. This is also at the public schools and it's the same thing they have hundreds of pre-nursing students and how many do they take each year? Anywhere from 40-80 maximum.

The private schools will cost you double or even triple that. Want to go to a fancy school like NYU or Columbia? Be prepared to come out with a debt that is close to 6 figures.

It makes EC look pretty attractive around these parts if you don't qualify for financial aid.

My friends who did it said you pay a lot for books & for each & every test & the clinical too. They said it was very expensive, but to me $6K is pricey, I paid less than $2K for my RN. The weekend clinical at the end is the 'nerve wracking' I was referring to.

i had all my pre- classes done prior to enrolling at ec . after i pay for the cpne i will have paid out right around $3500. i took my first test august 14th and will take my last jan 3rd, so what is that 4.5 months for the theory then the 4-6 month wait for the clinicals so right around a year. of course not everyone can go at this pace....

i know several lvns who did it.

it's very pricey & the clinical exam is extremely nerve wracking.

i believe it's no longer accepted by the brn in california (where i live)

if you already have your skills down (like the lvns i know) then it's ok to do it, but it's still very pricey & nerve wracking & can take a long time to complete.

did you do your bsn through ec? how long did it take you?

Where do you get pricey and nerve-wracking?

I've been banging out a test every few weeks. The total cost is going to come in under $6k. Where can you get your RN for less?!

I am a LPN. I have been a LPN since 1998. I am currently in the Excelsior program. I am okay with the price. I am able to work and receive tuition reimbursement, to help with some of the expenses.

I think in the end it will be worth it.

wow - so you took nur1-7 in less than five months? does the 4-6 month wait you referred to mean you waited this long to do the cpne?

did you go in as an lpn? in any case, i'm impressed! you must have been studying non-stop.

gloat on, girl, you have a right! thanks for the tip about number 5 - a pal and i are refugees from an rn program and are finishing with excelsior while working as lpns. please tell me how you heard about nc5 - i'm assuming an excelsior thread on allnurses? we could use some advice, as we've both just started in recent months.

How are things going in the Excelsior program? I am on the fence of starting the Excelsior route or with Broward College. Obviously the draw to not have to go to class and clinical is strong. I am currently working as a paramedic and previously worked in an hospital setting. I know Florida just passed the law for direct licensor after successful completion of the NCLEX for previous LPN/PM. Just wondering if the program is what they say it is... hard but do able for determined self discipline person.

Updated info.. Florida just passed a House Bill 1337 that allows nursing students from excelsior with prior LPN/PM license to have direct licenses. Meaning upon completion of the NCLEX no additional requirements or endorsements are required. Other states may require a set number of clinical hours as a nurse to be licensed in that state. Obviously just know what your state requires. This was confirmed with the Florida Board of Nursing.

to tonimoss14: I am a current Excelsior student, just finished my second exam and motivated now more than ever. I am an LPN x 2 years and continue to work FT and spend time with my kids without having as much stress as traditional nursing school. I like EC and think its a great option BUT I would not recommend it to anyone that did not have clinical experience and confidence. If you are self motivated and can teach yourself, EC is a good option.
