Please tell me what math class I can take online to satisfy the math requirement through excelsior now.. I hate algebra, I am not good at it at all! I have even paid for the straighterline math course to transfer to excelsior, but I made a 35 on the first test :o( Is it algebra we have to take? thanks!

I'm in the same boat. I don't know which Math class to take. Did you ever find out any info??

I believe it is. I also took College Algebra from SL and failed it the first time and retook it and they averaged my grades together, sent to ACE and I got credit. Math is not my thing...well Math is easy, but when they decide to add letters to math, I suck!

Okay friends, I'm a goober at Math too. Get someone to help you. I have a son that is a math wiz, but he's in college and so trying to do math over the phone wasn't very helpful. This is hilarious, but I actually "texted" him a problem and he was like, "Mom, I would love to help you, but I can't teach you math by texting!" Really? So I called our local junior college and paid $25 for a math tutor. She was a college graduate with a Math degree but couldn't get a job, so she tutors. Hope that helps!

I am almost finished with my math requirement (its taken me a month so far). I am taking beginning algebra through ALEKS (online course), it is self paced, and is $20 a month, so it should cost me only $40 by the time I'm done. Actually, a little more because once you are finished, you get your ACE credits (college credits, and that is $40). It sounds confusing at first, but is the best thing I found to do, to get the dreaded math over and done with !!! I highly recommend doing it this way. Oh, and I did get the course approved first from Excelsior.

Hi,

I did the ALEKS course, also... the Beginning Algebra. I had ALEKS add it to my ACE transcript, since I am taking some other courses, and having those added. (I did Information Literacy through Penn Foster, and I will be doing ENG 101 through Straighterline) The advisers at Excelsior said that they will accept credits for ACE approved classes. Initially, I thought I could do the Basic Math (it was EASY!), but that one is not ACE approved. On the ALEKS website, upper right corner 'search', type in ACE, and it will bring up a list of all ACE approved classes. Basic Algebra is the first one.

I really like their method... with the initial assessment, you will find out what you already know, and what you need to learn.... as you progress through their 'pie chart', and complete more sections, it is rewarding to see your percentages go up! They always show you how to do the problems, and you practice until you learn it. Once you score 70% or better on an assessment, you may submit for credit. Either have them send a transcript to Excelsior, or have ACE add it to your transcript.

Good luck!!

p.s. You can also do a free trial! See if you like it...

They accept "beginning algebra" from ALEKS? That's irritating! I took a combination beginning/intermediate algebra course in community college and they are refusing to accept it saying it's not "college level" math. :

I'm in the same boat. I spoke with an admissions advisor at Excelsior today and they told me that the ALEKS math could be excepted through ACE's transcript service. Furthermore, they informed me that college algebra was acceptable, but they stopped short of approving elementary algebra, and recommended that I pursue the intermediate algebra in order to achieve their expectation of a college level course. Previously, they did not accept my elementary algebra either from a community college several years ago. I see that Alex offers the elementary and intermediate algebra as a joint course. I think I will take the elementary algebra first and submit it and then if it fails, I will just have to go on through the intermediate algebra. I had found the used books to study for the contemporary math exam offered by Excelsior, but I would be better served to take that course in a classroom setting over 2 to 3 months. Another option is to take excelsior's basic math 101 eight week course, but I did not look at what it cost. And I don't see myself CLEP'ing out of algebra anytime soon either. Good luck to the rest of you.

I was told by an EC staff member last week that I could take an exam offered by EC called Contemporary Math in order to satisfy the math requirement. Currently the cost of the exam is $95. I am going to try it. Fingers crossed!

I took the alek math course. It is 20.00 a month, and 40.00 to submit your grade. I finished it in one afternoon, you just take an assessment , and once your at 70% or better you are done! I got a 73% on the first try and was happy with that as I have taken 2 algebra classes at a community college that excelsior would not accept. Good luck, and I reccomend this!

I know this is older, but what course did you take? I'm seeing mixed things about if I need to take College Algebra or Beginning/Intermediate Algebra. I suck at math so I would love to get this out of the way ASAP

You better check with Excelsior because a lot has changed in the last year or so I've already graduated but I saw the changes right as I did. You should get whatever you take approved first, too. I took a math course from Aleks, too ... and it was HARD but I did it ... "in an afternoon .. NOT even close" and I had to get some help from friends. Good luck to you !!
