As a podiatrist, one of my joys is teaching nurses to perform routine foot care. With the aging of America we will face literally millions of people in need to foot care to keep active and healthy in their senior years. Podiatrists are often busy with injuries and surgery and can't focus on this routine care. This is a void that nurses are moving into around the US. Canadian nurses have provided this care for many years but we will catch up to them!!

To answer your question more directly, foot care nursing is the effort to trim toenails and calluses. This might involve sanding devices such as dremels, scalpels, professional nail clippers, curettes, etc. It is within the nursing scope of practice in many states as long as the nurse can demonstrate specific training in this care. The WOCN offers certification for foot care nurses. Their prerequisites are one full day of didactic foot care training and one full day of hands-on foot care training.

It is a great effort that can be performed in clinic, in care facilities, in senior centers or in the patients home. It can be a private business, or part of a clinic. I hope this was helpful.
