non-medical elder care

Hello! I am new to this board and I was hoping someone out there can help me. My sitsuation: I am an LPN in NW OH wanting to start a non-medical elder care (assisted living) service NOT skilled home care. I have done much research on the topic through franchises, but I have only recently considered avoiding the franchise and doing it on my own. I have teamed up with a dear friend who is a social worker and we think we could really offer quality care to seniors. Is anyone out there doing this? If so, are you with a franchise or on your own? We live in an area that has a high elder population with very little competition. We have an attorney and CPA ready to discuss business with us. We have also located a policy/procedure manual for just such services and we have a wealth of marketing resources. Do we have a chance alone? Thank you in advance for your time! :)

There are thousands of private ALFs in Florida. Don't even need a license for 5 or less clients. Check the Florida nurses discussions. They may be able to link you up with ALFs there. Legal guardians look for private homes to place their clients. Check at the courthouse for guardians. Also, check with the health department.

I don't do this nor do I live in Florida. However, here in Indiana, my grandmother lives in a place like this. The guy who runs it is an LPN. His wife who helps part time (although she's on maternity leave) is an aide and they have another aide come in part time.

They take in four people at a time, and charge $2000 a month. Only thing family pays for extra is meds and medical expenses. He advertises in the local paper as "elder care for less than $3 an hour", which it is, covering the 24/7 week.

If I thought I could stand it I would do it.

BTW, they live in a gorgeous three story Victorian home with inground pool and hot tub. They have a chair lift on the back staircase for the little patients to use. So I assume they are indeed doing well financially.

hello ive been wanting to do this also. but havent been able to get information or guid lines could you email some information i live in tx.

I am also wanting to open up a "retirement home" here in NC. Any information you could share would be very appreciated.

I Am In California, And They Make You Go Through An Orientation Class, And Thats Where They Give You All The Information You Need To Know. You Have To Get A Back Ground Check, Get An Administrators Certificate, There Are Several Steps To Getting Licensed. I Am In The Process Of Starting Up A Non Medical Home. I Am A Lpn, And Have Been In Health Care Since 1989. Most Places Want You To Have 3 Months Worth Of Start Up Cost, Meaing The Money That You Would Pay For Rent/ Mortgage, Food For The Residents, Utilities, Furniture Payments, Briefs, Laundry Det., Car Notes If Any( Transportation For Them) What You Would Pay Your Staff, If You Plan On Having Staff.........what Ever You Can Think Of As Expenses, Add It Up, And Multiply It By 3.........it Will Cost Me Around 25,000 To 30,000 To Get One Up And Running.........if You Have Any Questions, Feel Free To Ask Me......again I Am Going Through The Process As We Speak.......good Luck To You.

Begin with searches on the State Department of Health Websites. Most personal care must be licensed by the department of health in many states. Also - Contracts should be obtained with the Area Agencies of Aging and also with the Medicaid state systems - Asking the Area Agency of Aging can begin to direct you in a miriad of directions. Some Veterans Administrations will also offer contracts for personal care, and don't forget the special populations such as HIV. That is where I began my search. That should keep you busy for awhile ;)

That is very useful information. Question: Are these resources specifically for non-medical clients or could you refer to these places to find clients for private duty (through Medicaid reimbursement)?

Hi, I Have Also Been Interested In Starting A Non-medical Home, In Califorina. Have You Finished The Process Yet? If So Any More Info You Came Across? How Did You Find The Classes To Teach You How To Get Started And Licensed, Administrators Cert. Etc.?

Are you talking about starting a non-medical home care business where you provide services to the elderly in their homes like providing companions, preparing meals, personal care, etc.? I'm in the process of saving money to start one of these businesses. I've checked with other franchises also and if you have had any experience in the geriatric field you can start your own without paying thousands of dollars in franchise fees. I think you have a great chance of succeeding in this field as the elderly population is growing, especially us baby boomers, and this definitely will fill a niche. Keep us informed on your plans and progress.
