Nurses Entrepreneurs

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could give me feedback on starting up a ACLS/BLS business.

Is it worth it? I mainly wanted to start it to have a another income and for all the benefits of having a small business.

Does one need a city license to operate or at least sometype of business license?

Anyhelp would be great.

I have a BLS business. What are you looking for specifically? I have one large corporate client that is enough for me, it will never be my full time job but it's a nice side business. It's tough to find clients. If you keep your overhead low by renting equipment and finding a training center that doesn't charge an arm and leg for cards you can get established without putting down a butt ton of money, and turn some profit to finance your own equipment.

Thanks Big Al for your response!

I was estimating $1000 for start up cost? Do you think that is enough ? I am not looking for a corporate client but I am looking to possible teach maybe 3-5 clients a week. I am not looking necessarily looking for massive profit (it would be nice though) but I am more interested in the perks of a small business and tax write-offs and all. I just simply dont want all my taxes to go to the government as I am a new nurse trying to keep my money!

Well if your buying equipment used, and very thrifty you can get setup for about that. I recommend eBay. But rent your dummies and find some you like before buying them. The DVD is about $95.00 on it's own. That just for BLS. I can't figure any tax benefits, but truthfully I fell bass ackwards into the gig and never really bothered setting up a business proper. I'm just paid with a 1099. I have a cost per student down to about $5, but that took a lot of looking around for the best prices and I own my own dummies. When I started it was about $10.00 per card.

I will look into the proper way to setup the business. I want to set this up as a traveling business but initially it will be starting in Kentucky and move to California.

Generally business licenses are needed if sales tax must be collected. Otherwise, your RN license is all the regulatory stuff you need.

Certainly the IRS gives better breaks to businesses than individuals, but usually you need to set up a corporate entity to take full advantage. Since it sounds like this will just be chump change on the side and not your main income, I don't think you should bother until you discover that your business will be full time, and that you can benefit from corporate taxation rules. Depending on your needs, you may find that adding a Schedule C to your personal 1040 (making you a sole proprietor automagically) gets you the vast majority of the benefits of incorporation. I've seen businesses with hundreds of employees that were still operating as sole proprietorships (somewhat foolishly in my opinion because that where limited liability protection of a corporate shell is a real win for incorporation).

So becoming a BLS instructor as an LPN is it possible? I want to do like 5-10 clients a month or like 4 times a month.

I am an Lpn and have been doing it for about six years or so now. So yes it's possible. It's not exactly easy to find clients, I don't do public classes, so the client base came first then the business.
