Re: Case Management
Yes, I have my own business and I was hired as a nurse consultant (case management) by an agency that serves people with developmental disabilities.
They are a small agency that can't necessarily afford to have a full time nurse, however they still need a RN to oversee the medical aspect of their business. The clients/patients either live independently or in a "host home" and need support/education with med admin., nutrition counseling, I make physical assessments/skin assessments, diabetes teaching, protocol/plan development based on goals set by their primary medical team and most importantly I provide medical advocacy either by attending medical appointments or speaking with the team to assist with the best plan of treatment.
This is a very small list of what I actually do for the agency. I would say that this is probably the most rewarding work I do in my business. It has certainly paved the way for other services that I provide.
In this economy, businesses are looking to cut costs and even though I charge more per hr than hiring a staff nurse, they do not have to pay my taxes, benefits, retirement, vacation and of course do not have to guarantee me employment (depending on the contractual agreement).
