While they search for jobs, they study for the CCS. If they pass the CCS, great! If they do not pass the CCS, at least they have the CCS-P to list on their resumes in applying to remote coding jobs.

Coders with the CCS and the CCS-P can remotely work from home.

What other questions do you have?
The company that I worked for in California has an ad in this latest issue of Nurseweek. They are hiring. They prefer ERi ICU and Crit Care RN's. But even their ad says experience preferred but they will train. I worked for this company for almost 11 years. I have no certifications. I only have the "training" that they did. Don't get me wrong. They are a multi million dollar company that does billing for ER physicians. We didn't work for the hospital or the insurance company. We worked for the docs. We did our best to make to make sure the insurance co paid what they were supposed to. Then we critiqued the doctor's documentation to let them know how they could better tjheir documentation to be able to demand a higher reimbursement rate. So my point is that I wouldn't get caught up with certifications.

Thanks for the info, however, with my nursing degree, what is the best way to study for this. A class through AHIMA or self study? I have found that most jobs require 3-5 years experience before working remotely. How do you get a remote job without the experience?

You can check this web site out which may help you land the job without the 3-5 years experience.

I think that how you present your resume is key to getting the job. It was for me.

You can PM for additional information. I would be glad to help.

I am interested in coding also and have started a self study program in coding. But I am concerned medical coding may soon be outsourced overseas, just like transcription. I googled Craigslist Medical Coder and there were legit medical coder positions open, as well as schools advertising to become a coder. But what scared me the most were several Craigslist ads like this one http://delhi.craigslist.co.in/hea/918601358.html and many others that were overseas and were recruitung medical coders as it was being outsourced...

Here is a US based company that is outsourcing its medical coding: http://www.globaledgeusa.com/why_outsource.htm

These links may help you decide whether you really want to pursue coding, whether there is outsourcing or not. If you think that this will affect future job prospects, then pursue a different field.
