Let me just say that bacterial meningitis is not fun. I luckily survived this a few years ago. I received a LP similar to the way this patient did in this story, by leaning over a food tray. All I remember is being yelled at by nurses for being sick, which obviously I couldn't help, being so ridiculously out of it. I don't remember much of anything after that. Meningitis is certainly a scary thing.

I think it is the most horrible thing for you to say that the student distracted you. First of all the student is there for a learning experience not to cover your ass that is your own responisbility. Maybe if you had ended your story saying that you were rushing to care for your pt and forgot about your own safety that i would accept. But the nerve of you to take the blame off of your self. It is thinking like that gets everyone to hate students.

Come on guys she's not blaming the med student! Really? Its obvious she took a situation where she made a mistake and injected a little humor in it fully realizing it was her error.

I'm was an Air Force Medic, and when I got out I found a job as a phleb...loved it! One day I was called to the ER for a draw...I grabbed what I needed and ran down and straight into the room the caller stated to go in. The nurse caring for this patient also happened to be someone I was dating and he knew my knowledge was more than a pleb. (They also were very busy and short staffed this day) In getting set up he's doing 100 things and asking me for a 100 other things. Of course it's chaos because this lovely lady was out of her mind and all over the place. I am helping remove clothes and holding her so he could catch her...I still had not what I was down there to do lol. Finally finished and about to stick this poor lady when Mr. rN says "sh%t where is your mask/gown??" I looked stupid because I was lost...then everything he had been rambling off sunk in...bacterial meningitis was what they thought and Neither of us where protect even 1/2 right. I finished what I was there to do, hell I had been in the room for 20+min anyways. Needless to say I was later ran through the ER for triage and a nice little pill. It was chaos I will never forget!
