Hi everyone, I know some of you would find it weird or raise their eyebrows about a NICU (neonatal) nurse taking an ER position. But yes, I just accepted a part time NICU position, and also accepted an ER position after a month.

A little bit about me, I'm a NICU nurse from Philippines with 1year experience and just got my license here in Canada last November. I recently got a job for a part time position in NICU, and still in the beginning of my preceptor shift. I applied to all nursing positions available here in my place, even ICU and ER positions. Also, I took Cardiology Nursing 1 and 2, and ACLS. So credential and theory wise, I'm qualified for ICU/ER jobs.

My question is, do you think it's possible to handle 2 part time positions in entirely different specialty areas at the same time? Does anybody had/have the same situation as mine? I'm kinda overwhelmed because I feel like a new grad again. And the set up here in Canada is different of course so I'm still adjusting in a way. Nevertheless, I'm very thankful to be hired for these positions.

I am not in Canada, but I will offer some encouragement anyway.

Take a deep breath. You will be fine. Yeah, you can do that...although you may not have much of a social life if you do.

Lots of change is lots of hard... ;-P

It sounds like in a year or two you will be perfectly suited to a critical care transport job.

Better question is, will the two part time lines work? Will you ever have to double shift? Can you provide quality care to your patients while learning new specialties?

Aww. thank you for the encouragement @tewdless. Yes, I'll take this as a challenge and will work really hard. I know it will be difficult but I'll do my very best.

Those are my biggest dilemma too. Schedule and learning to entirely different specialties at the same time. NICU is not new to me at all, so I know I'll be comfortable with it. I just need to familiarize myself with the set up and protocols. On the other hand, ER is a big challenge for me. Especially that I will have to deal with adults again.

Hopefully, I can negotiate with my schedules. I'm really looking forward for both jobs. ER has been a dream job for me, and I'm really fortunate to finally have this.

Yup, that's why I worked hard to be able to penetrate ED. I invested on continuing education and training. I'm young and I'm at this phase that I want to explore so many things. :)

Sounds so interesting. Right now I'm still a novice for both specialty. But I'm really motivated to be that expert nurse in the future. :)

Sounds really interesting! I always thought if I didn't do ED I would like NICU. Keep us updated on how it goes!
