What is your incentive for obtaining your CEN?

by LunahRN Staff

Besides the professional satisfaction, that is. I'm wondering what your employers give you, if anything, for obtaining your CEN. Where I work, we get a "bolus of cash" -- 2% of our annual salary, less taxes and all that jazz. Not bad! Just got my little bolus on Friday. It'll cover the gap in my education funding, with a little left over for some sort of retail therapy/celebration.

Well, I'm an ICU nurse, but at our facility we get a $0.75 raise for getting our CCRN, as well as our name on the wall. Oh yeah, and professional satisfaction.

I got my name on the wall, too -- we have a CEN plaque in the ED. I'd almost prefer a raise over the bolus -- it would amount to more in the long run. Oh well! I'm not complaining.

Nothing from my employer at this time, I am not in the ED and I am not up for promotion. However my employer has a career ladder and gives points toward promotion with a CEN among other certs and degrees. I plan to get my CEN in the next two years even though I am not going to be in the ED because my goal is Trauma Nursing and it helps me with my future away from this facility.

Where I work, you get a $1.00 raise for your specialty certification as well as recognition on a department plaque.

At one time we would receive $1.00 per hour compensation for a "recognized" certification. Up to two certifications were allowed. For paramedics, this included; CCEMTP and FP-C. For nurses, this included; CEN, CFRN, and CCRN.

However, this is no longer the case. I have herd people quote finances and economics for the change in policy.

My incentive was my own ego.

But asside from that our incentive here is having $$$ to go to conferences to keep certification. The amount goes up each year you have your cert. I just spent a fun filled week in New Orleans at the hosptials expense.

At my hospital we also get a 2% bonus of our annual base salary. I'm trying to study for the CEN. I just completed and passed my TNCC and will get a 2% bonus for that also. Every little bit helps!!

We're limited to just one 2% award per year.
