I just heard about a state that is proposing mandatory annual flu shots for school attendance, and it reminded me of a story I heard a while back that to me is even weirder, and more dangerous.

Earlier in this century, it was believed that an enlarged thymus gland caused assorted illnesses in children, and many kids had this organ irradiated in order to shrink it. One state (IIRC Connecticut) proposed legislation making this mandatory for school attendance, and it very narrowly missed being passed.

The people who underwent this well-intentioned treatment now have a very high rate of thyroid cancer.

I don't have a problem with this in itself. I was incredibly horrified to learn that until very recently, it was usually done with no pain relief.

Hear, hear! I am pregnant and had no idea that routine circumcision was practiced here in the states until my mother-in-law told me. I am from the UK, where it is most definitely not. There is no way n hell that anyone will be hacking off my childs foreskin without a VERY good and research based reason. Cutting down on the risk on STD's aint good enough!
Excellent example of a insane medical practice accepted by the masses!

They don't do it unless the parents give consent (this hasn't always been the case either ) but here in the Midwest, yes, the majority of boys are circumcised as newborns.

I often hear "I want him to look like his dad." Folks, do fathers and sons compare their penises or what? That sounds a wee bit warped to me!

Not warped at all if Dad helps with potty training. My boys all learned to pee with Dad. Plus, we work in the woods far from toilets and peeing behind a tree with Dad is normal too.

One of our favorite stories is when we were out getting firewood and #2 son (he was about 3) had to pee and so he and Dad went behind the pickup. When they came back into the pickup, my husband was chuckling. Our son had watched Dad pee and said "wow Dad, you're a good pee-er".

I've told that story and this one before on here. We were at dinner with friends who also had two boys. Their oldest son had to go to the bathroom and he was about 3 also. Dad took him. When they got back to the table the boy piped up and said "My Dad has a really big penis". All the adults about fell over in their chairs from laughter.

Which is why the idea that parents want their boys to look like Dad is so silly. There is no way an adult penis looks like a kid's penis . .circ'd or not.

Regarding this thread - very interesting stuff. Thanks.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I hope all goes well.

A suggestion: in many areas, there's almost a circumcision conspiracy. Make certain that your OB knows that you do not want this done on your son. It's important that everyone involved know very plainly of your wishes.

During our psych studies my class had to watch archived footage of treatments carried out in mental health institutions during the early part of last century. One that was paticularly dangerous was the practice of Insulin Therapy which was used to treat
mental disorders such as schizophrenia before ECT had been developed. The practice involved laying a person on a bed, blindfolding them and giving them large doses of insulin to drop their BGL's dangerously low. The patient would start to sweat and drool (hence the nick name 'wet therapy'), slip into a coma and begin to convulse thus having a similar effect to ECTs. Very disturbing to watch.

Another medical practice they won't be able to believe in 100 years. (This one already sounds pretty dumb):

Recommending that folks eat a high carb, low fat diet to lose weight.
