Starting out in emergency

  1. I'm a new graduate Registered Nurse (in Australia) in my 6th month of the program. My next rotation is to be the emergency room and I'm just after some tips or advice that anyone may have to offer.

    Many thanks

    Hayden,

1 - Ask questions - because there is always something to learn.

2 - Don't act like you know it all - because nobody does.

3 - If you have the option of just watching, or doing without charting do it. Although charting will save your @#$ in a lawsuit, hands on experience, or observation first hand will help immensly. Let's face it, there are a lot of books out there on charting, and a lot of teachers that are supposed to be teaching you how to chart. First hand experience, is priceless.

What do you need to be a good ER nurse? As I see it, beyond the knowledge, it's a sense of humor, common sense and the ability care for patients the way you would want to be cared for.
