Practice Scenario Questions for ER Interview

Specialties Emergency

Published

Hi All,

I've been on a job hunt since I graduated last year and finally (thank goodness!) have landed an interview for a new grad/residency program in the ER. I already had my first interview, which seemed like a 'get to know you' interview. Now, I have my second one coming up and was told to be prepared to answer scenario/clinical questions. If you work in the ER, what are some questions that you remember being asked in your interview? Or even if not, feel free to throw in some practice questions for me! I want practice. =)

Thanks in advance. :)

Take your time in answering whatever they ask. Keep your thoughts of prioritizing in mind and they wanna hear pt satisfaction. They'll probably wanna hear what you'd do if you found a pt unresponsive and what would you do with multiple pt requests at 1 time. Don't try so hard, you want to be genuine and not scripted

I just interviewed last month (got the job, start tomorrow, so nervous!) for an ER position. I was asked a question along the lines of what I would do if I had an order that I needed to start a Foley catheter in one patient (received that order first) and then I have another patient who's oxygen sats are dropping in the high 80's...My answer to how I would prioritize was the ABCs. They liked that answer.

Another question is how I would deal with a difficult physician. In my last job, I dealt with an older, Army doctor who liked things her way and did not play nice with others most of the time. I eventually learned to let her tirades roll off my back and not take it personally.

Not sure if you have gotten that question yet, "What is your greatest weakness?" I hate that question! I thought about that one a lot, and talked with some friends about it, until I figured out an answer that was truthful but wouldn't make my interviewees hesitant to hire me.

Good luck!! Let us know how it goes :)
