I saw something new and scary

  1. Ive done this for a long long time now. And for the first time in a long time I saw someting new. A mother had brought her teenage daughter in for drinking her own urine. The pt had no c/os other than her mother bringing her into the ER for eval.
Apparently there are some alledged health benefits to this, but the thought just boggles my mind.I hope this isnt some new trend out there

My mother always told me if I get stranded for a long period of time... Not in traffic or anything I could drink my own urine to prevent dehydration.... I dont plan on getting stranded

eww. What possible health benefits? Now my grandmother says washing your face in your own urine will clear you skin up, but I'd never drink it, if it came out it's meant to be out for a reason.

Ewwie. I've always heard to put urine in an ear to help cure an ear infection. A z-pack will do me just fine, thanks!!!

many facial products have urea listed in it. It is a deriviative of animal urine. That is the only connection I could see.

    Isn't urine poisonous to drink?

Believe it or not, we got into a big discussion about this in A&P...my prof started it by giving us this weird visual of a chef in the kidneys "cooking" up urine...I forget what the original point was, but then somebody brought up drinking your urine if stranded, etc. She said (prof) that yes, you can do that, and its perfectly safe (since urine is sterile) but you couldn't let it sit around, cause it will start developing nasty bacteria within just a few minutes of voiding...

Way back when I was a new nurse...I was passing meds and I went into a patients room it was 0100 and I poured the water into his glass. He then told me the water was rotten!!!! I guess he was more confused that I thought....He had pee'd into his water pitcher!!!!!!! Call that one to the MD!!!!

Quite a few years ago, the was an earthquake in Mexico City. People were trapped for ~ a week. One man, who survived, stated he did drink his own urine and that his wife and MIL wouldn't do it, and did not survive. I suppose I might if I was that desparate, but things would have to be preeetttty bad.

    Gives new meaning to recycling!!

And to think you kissed your grandma on the cheek. Sorry.

Remember what Rip Torn said on Dodgeball..."Do I HAVE to drink my own urine? NO, I do it because it's sterile and I enjoy the taste..."
