Grateful Patients :)

I love coming to this site to read other ER nurses venting, since I too need it as well.

I recently had a sweet old lady give me a 2$ dollar bill bc she was grateful for the care she received (I tried VERY hard to give it back, she put it in my pocket and shoo'd me away similar to my grandma lol). For this woman, 2$ was a big deal as she came from a nursing home and really isn't supposed to have cash on her. She said she was waiting to give it to someone who REALLY deserved it. Seriously, made me tear up a little lol.

I want to hear about some of your most grateful patients!

I had a patient who illustrates children's books... she wrote me a sweet note and signed the inside of the cover of one of her books and gave it to me. she was so grateful, i think of her on my tough days!

Got a $50 gift card from a rich patient in Key West after she was discharged, bought my crew coffee and bagels.

I worked in an ICU before coming to the ER and I will never forget this sweet lady who tried her best to give us all the cash she had ( all of her $2-3) ... We gratefully said no ma'am it was our pleasure and so on but as these ladies tend to be she would not take no for an answer, so she asked what kind of soda we liked and quickly made her daughter go to the vending area and then "secretly deliver" them to our desk... We came to thank her all she wanted was to give us a kiss on the cheek ... Such a wonderful experience to keep us going when it gets tough

We have a gentleman that our ER saved 17 years ago from an Acute MI - every year he drops off a cake & a thank you card to both us & ICU thanking us for helping save his life.

We have a family whose child passed away on our floor many years ago that comes every year on thanksgiving and brings dinner for the staff and serves it as a thank you and reminder of all we did both for them and their child.

That simple "thank you" from the truly sick pt as they go upstairs is great. I also like the highfives from the kids when they leave fast-track.

Before I started nursing I was in and out of hospital having LPs to drain Csf and make life a bit more bearable, when I got my shunt placed I went to all the departments that helped look after me with a card and 1.5kg box of whitmans chocolates....emergency, radiology, neurosurgery and neurology! Mum also gave the neurosurgeon that placed the shunt a bottle of wine and I gave the RMO, my neurologist and some others a box of chocolates.... My family is forever grateful and no one can possibly understand how one op changes the dynamics of my family in such a drastic way!
