Virginia has mini compromised

They will allow licensing by endorsement with 960 clinical hours as an RN from another US state or federal facility.

It's something.

This is for Virginia based Excelsior College students. It's being publicly addressed through August, and then hopefully it will become legal.

LOL! I was just coming to post this -- I got the same email:

As many of you are aware last year the Virginia Board of Nursing made a decision to no longer recognize Excelsior School of Nursing graduates for licensure by examination or endorsement after December 31, 2009.

In response to this decision Excelsior College staff have been in an on-going dialog with the Board of Nursing and its staff to encourage the Board to revisit its decision and to adopt an endorsement option for Excelsior College nursing graduates. We are pleased to inform you that the Board has agreed to advance regulations to permit endorsement of our graduates with 960 hours of practice as a registered nurse in another US jurisdiction or in a federal facility.

The public comment period for the proposed regulatory change allowing licensure by endorsement in Virginia is July 6 through August 5. We will be offering comment in support of the proposed regulation. You may also offer comment beginning July 6 in support of this regulatory change by visiting the Board’s website at http://www.dhp.virginia.gov/nursing/

You may contact the Excelsior College State Board Team at vanurse@excelsior.edu if you have questions about the proposed regulation and its impact on your ability to be licensed in Virginia.

Thank you for your time and efforts.

Sincerely,

Who knows maybe they will follow Georgia's lead and allow direct licensure with certain stipulations (preceptorships and clinical hrs). Just a thought; and I wish all of the Virginia students/graduates the best.

I talked to someone from the BON early this year (February or March) regarding this, and thats what they told me. Is this new?

Either way, thats frikkin awesome! I just moved from VA and will become licensed in AZ. I called to make sure that when I come back (when my hubby retires in 10 years) that I will be able to practice. I was told the same thing, with 960 clinical hours (which I think I can swing in 9-10 years) that they will endorse my license. VERY good to know that this may became law.

Virginia, making some progress...WOOHOO!!!

PS...in Arizona they stipulate 120 hour preceptorship to be able to sit for the NCLEX...

Virginia says that 120 isnt nearly enough. They want you to have at least 500 from a regular nursing school, I believe.

Yeah, as far as I know, this is new -- prior to this, the "official" word was that the door was closed to EC grads who were not NCLEX-ready by 12/31/09.

I just wonder where these BONs come up with these random numbers of hours. Virginia, 960. Colorado, 2000. North Dakota, 400. Vermont, 480. Do they just make it up as they go along, or is this based on something concrete?

I envision they all sit around in a circle jerk and then one of them reaches up his/her a** and pulls out a number. Then all the other monkeys clap and cheer.
