Just wanted to share some of my experience with Rio Salado with you guys.

I've just finished taking BIO156 (Introductory biology for allied health) as a refresher/pre-req for A&P. It was amazing. By far the best instructor I have ever had, online or offline for any subject. He was very demanding, assigning essays, labs and quizes every week, but it was absolutely worth it.

I also finished HCC145AA, which is Medical Terminology. I wasn't too excited about this instructor. All she did was put online some notes on the test and a list with words we needed to know for the exam. She gave us a quiz and a case study every two weeks. It was an easy class, so I can't really blame her for not putting in a lot of effort.

Then I'm also taking MAT142, Applied College Math, right now. The instructor is not as actively involved as the one for biology. However, this math class is about the most interesting I've ever had. It actually is all about applying what you already know about math. Again, there is a quiz due every other week. And there are TONS of exercises available on MathLab.

Starting A&P in two weeks!

This is another great feature about Rio Salado, there classes start every two weeks!! I started my pre-reqs last May and I will have all of them finished by May. Which is a LOT faster than would be possible through the old-fashioned way.

When you're an Arizona resident, Rio Salado offers the same tuition rates as the other community college within the Maricopa Community Colleges, this is $65/credit hour.

They also have testing centers all over the Valley, so no matter where you live in the Phoenix metro area, they WILL have a center near you!

As you might be able to tell, I absolutely love it!

Course Costs:

Rio Salada: $159/per credit hour ($477/per 3 units course) No experience with

Edukan: $115/per credit hour ($345/per 3 unit course) Great courses. please note Micro is a hybrid course (you need to get to a lab). Loved Intro to Soc, A&P, Ethics

BYU: $390/per 3 unit course on average (broken down is about $130/per credit hour) You get 1 yr to take the course. Micro is only a 3hr class

CCCOnline: $222.40/per credit hour (Holy smokes! That's $667.20 for a 3 unit course) A bit pricy for non CO residents ($993 for 4hr class) but micro is all online

I know there are more out there, but these are the ones I wrote down as I was searching. Hope these are helpful to some of you.
Good luck on your search

Hello All,

I have taken more than ten online classes through Rio Salado, including A&P I and II and Microbiology. I love my online classes....HOWEVER...nothing I had done prior prepared me for the horror that was microbiology online.

If you have any experience or background in micro, the online course will probably be easy for you. I would never recommend this class online to anyone who did not already have basic micro knowledge.

The "lab" for micro is simply submitting papers, you do not have the oportunity to grow specimens or even see examples in person.

Hi Cutiepie612,

For the AP and Micro classes did you take those online? If so, do they have labs with them? And how are the tests/exams given for the online courses? Do you have to have them proctored or do you just take them online at home?

Thanks!

Yes I took them all online with Edukan which I picked Colby Community College as my school through there its in KS... I think the website is Edukan.org... They have somewhat of lab.. the AP course has a very good interactive lab on a CD that you look at the bones and parts of the body and it has a worksheet booklet that you will have to answer the questions to .. and Micro has a GREAT lab online with a cd as well and you experiment with all the chemicals I LOVE THIS CLASS then you had to go into a lab on campus ( it can be a campus by you just have to talk to an teacher or student teacher) its took me a like 3 hours in one day to look over materials with a lab teacher and do one lab that the teacher ask of you... then you mail it to the teacher.. its an outline of your performance and what you know.. its very easy...

As for the test THEY ARE VERY EASY IF YOU STUDY for AP look over the book, notes from teacher and cd from back of book (the test on there are some of the same) .. Mirco is easy.. they are all online you make sure u have your notes, book and outline of chapter in front of you... pay attention to the questions you can find all of them in your book and def your notes .. and you might what to get a study buddy in the classes .. let me know if you have any more questions
Your welcome
Chrissy
