Sometimes there are nursing classes offered in the summer (including summer just past - http://prodinteract.indstate.edu/pls...disp_dyn_sched). Also, I don't think ISU actually sets up your preceptor. You choose the preceptor...and if he/she meets criteria, then ISU will work on the contract with him/her. Classes are on a semester basis. Sometimes you can work ahead within those semester guidelines - that depends on how the faculty have the course set up.

Summer nursing classes are typically upper level so far. ISU sets up the contract and gets a list of qualified candidates for your preceptor and then you are able to choose from these people. The Health Assessment class is the only one that you have to find a preceptor all on your own.

Just wanted to address this for the benefit of those not in CA. This isn't the way it works outside of CA (no idea how y'all do it but I know its different). When Mike was the contract coordinator it was somewhat similar to this. He did the contract and put me in contact with the nurse educator for the hospital. She found me a preceptor. Mark who is the new clinical coordinator, does things much differently. He gets the legal contract set up and that's it. From there you are on your own. I have to admit this was frustrating to me because my first semester was with Mike and I was spoiled. Haha! When I started making arrangements for Johns Hopkins I called the contact he listed. It was the legal dept and they had no idea who I needed to contact. I did all the legwork for that on my own. It was tedious. Worth it but tedious (and frustrating!). Just an FYI so people know upfront that you will be doing most of the work in setting this up. It was different with Mike but not anymore. I've found that hospitals and really willing to have an independent student providing they have enough preceptors to go around (with new grads and all).

Yesterday I talked to Mark( the guy responsible for set up clinicals for students) and he told me to call a few places to ask if they will accept students and then he would initiated the process. Well, I called 8 places amd none of them wants students unless from a local CollegesSo, my next option is Val Paraiso, IN ( 2 hours ).
I am kind of desapointed because the clinicals are not found by the ISU, but fby students. We give them a contact number and then they initiated.
If I do not find a place closer, I will drive the extra miles for clinicals. That's crazy!
Jetski, I was just reading through these older posts and wondering how everything turned out for you at ISU? Did you graduate already? I am waiting for my acceptance notification for spring 2010 right now and anticipating phase III. Can you share your experience with the program? BTW, I also live near Chicago... thanks
