Hospitals and Hotels for the CPNE

by Cobweb

I would like to stay in a hotel close enough to the CPNE site to drive my electric wheelchair there, and I was hoping some of you CPNE vets could help me pick out some sites where the hospitals and hotels are close enough to do that. I'm interested in all the regions, since I'm shooting for a cancellation, although my preference would probably be the South or Midwest--I admit, I'm kinda scared of New York! Savannah is my top pick, since it's only a three-hour drive from my house, but I'm willing to go anywhere to get this .....blank blank unmentionable word...test over with. Thanks!

I thought one of the sites in NY -- was it Albany Medical Center? -- was literally across the street from the hotel. I know the recommended hotel for Mansfield, OH is about 1.3 miles from the hospital. How far can your electric wheelchair go before needing a charge?

Don't be scared of NY, really -- most people I know who have tested there have passed the first time. It's more about the student's prep than the site, in my opinion.

Well, I drive my chair eight hours a night, so it can go a ways!

I'm not scared of New York because of the sites, I'm just afraid of the big city, lol. I'm a redneck girl from way back in the sticks. I've never taken a cab, never rode on an airport van, never stayed in a big hotel, only been on an airplane twice, etc etc. I don't reckon it'll be that much different from Atlanta, though, now that I think on it. I've heard really nice things about the folks in Albany!

I feel your pain...LOL! I have not yet taken a flight. Everyone in my entire family has done so more than once, but not I. I also fear the big city. Running around MD Anderson...huge hospital! helped calm my fears though because I noticed the workers were just doing as they had been trained, and were just people like you and I. I am so glad Lunah mentioned the preparation that we ensure that we have is the utmost importance. I kept thinking I want to go to the smallest hospital, and I don't care if I have to travel across the world. Well, now I am going to go to the closest one possible. I live in Texas, so I am going to choose Lubbock as my first choice and Amarillo as my second choice as these are the two that I can drive to. I may fly to a workshop though. Just remember. Prepare well and you will pass. Learn how to keep those nerves down. Easy for me to say those words...I have not started prepping yet. But...I am going to try and figure what helps me to control my stress levels because I stress easy in unfamiliar environments. Take care and good luck to you! Traci

Oh, you meant New York CITY! You don't have to test there. There's a site in Queens, but the other sites are not in the city itself.

The hotels in Savannah are about 2 miles from the hospital and I would not recommend you drive your wheelchair there. The parking is free and there are great handicap parking spaces right out front. The hospital is very accessible. Let me know if I can be of anymore help.

It might be helpful for me to mention that I probably won't take my own wheelchair, as I don't have a wheelchair van or anything like that. I will have to rent a chair and have them deliver it to the hotel. I can get around the unit OK, probably, but as you all know, sometimes it's a ninety mile hike from the parking lots to the hospital. I reckon exhaustion would keep me from getting too nervous, though

I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn, across the street from Albany Med.

cobweb, Albany has no relationship to NYC except that Albany is the NYS capitol. I moved upstate from NYC and believe me, NYC and NYS have nothing to do with one another.
