Ok update...I just sat down and went through all the textbooks that excelsior "requires and recommends" From the excelsior bookstore, you can get all the books (required and optional) brand new for right at $1200 as many used as possible for $985 or you can go on Half.com and get as many used as possible for $720! That's EVERY book, required and optional for all eight nursing courses...or you can buy the TCN books for $495 each brand new. I think I will be calling the TCN guy tomorrow and letting him know I can't afford going that way!

It was nice to have someone go through my transcripts and say, "here are the classes you need." I only need microbiology for Excelsior and then I can start the Nursing modules. So if I don't "enroll" in the nursing program until after my first nursing course (I get to skip health differences) I should only have to pay the $895 enrollment fee (ouch) and avoid the annual fees! I think that makes sense. My head is swimming but I am super excited!
Be careful. TCN cannot evaluate your transcripts. They are not authrorize to tell you what EC will accept. FYI you do not have to take Microbiology before you get into the nursing program. You can enter the program and still have 10 hrs of prerequistes to take. I did micro last while waiting on the CPNE. Good Luck.

You don't need every recommend book. Just get the Fundamentals, Peds, MEdsurg book and Maturnity book. All that other stuff is not necessary. Also try to get the previous edition for cheaper.

Oh I don't plan on getting every book, I was just amazed at the difference in the price versus TCN. I hate telling this guy no, he was such a sweet old guy (yes I know I am being played by the salesman LOL) Oh well I gotta keep my cash close!

You can also rent texts from textbook rental sites like chegg.com. Older editions can be rented for $11.99 for the course of a semester, about four months. I went to the library and checked out texts for free. If the text was not carried by that particular branch, they did an interlibrary loan for me, for which I paid a $1 admin fee. The library checkout method for free is the way to go. You can get a good look at the texts while you are studying for the exams and it will help you decide what you might want to purchase for your own library when you can better afford it.

Enrollment is $895, and I've never heard of it being waived. However, please be aware that you don't have to actually enroll until you're ready to take the third nursing exam. When you enroll, it starts the clock ticking toward your $440 student services annual fee, so sometimes it's good to wait to enroll. Good luck!

I think this is the page you're refering to, where excelsior actually does waive $500 of the enrollment fee if you commit to taking a certain number of course credits thru the college. however, I'm not sure if this applies to exam test outs, or if you must actually take courses thru them for it to count...

Yea that's the page! I read that and was like hmmm. But I'm quite sure there will be some kind of string attached that I won't like lol. I just called to enquire the notice of my being an Alabama resident and needing to have either an OB rotation or Psych rotation during my LPN program. I had OB, but didn't go thru Psych. Was also told that if I wanted to sit for Georgia boards I would need 350 hours preceptorship since I have been and LPN 3 years. I have no problems with any of this, I'm just happy I can go to school and continue my education.
