Default Re: Excelsior College Grads In Ga
Thank You all for the responses especially Huffman, I needed that swift kick in the butt. To clarify a few things, I knew GA did not let us take the NCLEX. But they stated that they would endorse another state's license. So I took NCLEX for MN but now that I am trying to endorse they are refusing.

I think I am the first to get this treatment because the Legal Nurse Consultant said effective July 1, 2008. I am going to fight it; I'm seeing an Attorney this afternoon. But I am concerned that it may get very expensive. Thankfully, my employers are backing me and are going to give me reference letters as to my experience and clinical skills.

Just keep me in your prayers, I would really appreciate it. I am not crying anymore; I am over the pity party syndrome. I think this is God's way of humbling me from pride and arrogance. I think my head was getting a little to big, I was getting a little too busy, and he needed to let me know just who was in control and made all of my accomplishments possible. He has gotten my attention. Enough said.

THANKS ALL

Default Re: Excelsior Students in Georgia
I have spoke with the GBON and EC and they said they are not aware of the above mentioned requirements. As a matter of fact one women who has worked for GBON for 8 years said there have been no changes as far as EC students requirments in the state of Georgia. I have a friend and co worker who graduated from EC and obtained her Georgia License in Feb 08 and is currently working as an ICU RN in Atlanta. Check with the GBON and they will confirm this information.

Spoke with an GBON employee this morning and she said nothing of the sort has been discussed. The requirments remain the same as far as testing for another state then getting reciprocity into Georgia. Also, verified with EC. I have a friend who tested in Oct 07 and received her Ga license in FEb 08. Her dates are close to Zimsaints test dates I wonder why it took GBON this long to contact Zimsaint???? I took my friend less than two weeks to get her Ga license I wonder why Zimsaints has taken since April??

Thanks for your input GradyRN2b08. I really find it hard to believe that the GaBON would make such a drastic change without some type of announcement. They are well aware that there are many GA LPNs and Paramedics who are EC students.

Zimsaint? Can you provide more details?

I don't recall telling you anything of my application for GA License....since April???? I know this is very disappointing news for all to hear. Even me, but I have no reason to lie about what I was told. You are welcome to send me a private message and I will give you the name and contact information to the GBON nursing official who actually told me that via phone on yesterday. If you are insinuating that I must be a bad nurse or something, then I will let you know that I have been a LPN in GA for 0ver 13 years and I have NEVER had any type of trouble or disciplines. I too am getting conflicting information from the GBON, just today two different employees told me two different things. One told me that there had been no changes that she was aware of. The other said that Excelsior was not reckonized but it was on a case by case basis. So I too don't know what to think. I just want to get to the bottom of the issue. All I know is I was denied and THAT IS the reason I was given. I also spoke with Excelsior and they too said that they have not heard of any thing to the sort. I am very confused at this point; I just want to know the reason so I can address it. I also wanted to know if anyone else had experienced the same treatment. I did see in a thread back in 2007 where a similar situation had happened to another post. It doesn't do any good to be angry and offended at my experience. If there are some changes going on I just feel it is important that we know. If my post offended you then I am sorry. But the GBON did tell me that this was something new as of this month; maybe it has not been fully disclosed; I may very well be the first to get caught up in a transition. This morning I spoke with a Professor of Nursing at a local University that does Excelsior Clinical and she too had not heard of anything of the sort. I am just scared, confused and looking for answers....that's all.

Zimsaint it sounds like we might not be getting all of the info regarding you obtaining a Georgia RN license. I looked back on your previous posts and saw that you took the NCLEX all the way back in April of this year for the. I personally know that the reciprocity process in GA takes just a few weeks from Minnesota (saw that in another one of your previous posts). It's highly unusual for it to have taken this long for the GBON to have given you feedback. Is there some reason why it took so long that you did not state earlier?

Oh, and I checked with the GBON and Excelsior and they both said that what you stated earlier about a July 1, 2008 deadline for Excelsior graduates that have passed the NCLEX is incorrect.

I am not going to discuss this issue anymore since it seems to rub so many people the wrong way. But as the saying goes "don't shoot the messenger." I have consulted legal counsel and I will allow him to do his job. I too am sure Excelsior will pursue this matter legally if it is going to affect the student body as a whole. At the very least I feel they should have been entitled to an adequate notice. I am watching to see if another Excelsior student I know who just applied to GA this week get licensed.

But you all must remember that many states that entered into a settlement with Excelsior to allow completion of program and licensure for students, did so only after Excelsior filed suit to take them to court. Several BON has links on their web sites. CA, FL. and maybe others. These BON too tried impromptu changes that were challenged by Excelsiors lawyers. I am not sure what is going on; All I know is what I was told. And I know as for me the conversation is now closed. I wish you all well. And I hope for all our sake that it is NOT true : Only time will tell.

I am just joining the conversation, but was curious... If a state decides that they are no longer going to accept EC grads will they usually set a date so that anyone finishing by a certain date will be able to be licensed? In other words, once you finish the program, are all the states that allow EC grads now going to always allow those who have graduated? Not trying to muddy the water, I just don't want to see all of us who have worked so hard eventually being limited to only working in the state that we are now currently licensed in.

thanks

Firemedic7, that depends on the state I guess. A few years back, CA decided that they would not allow EC grads to gain licensure in their state. I think that they issued a statement stating that you had to be enrolled in EC prior to December 1, 2003 to be eligible for licensure (or something to that effect), which meant you either had to meet extra clinical requirements, or you were ineligible.

As far as other states go, I do believe there have been instances where a state has just decided that they no longer allow initial licensure for EC grads. I'm not 100% sure but I think Kansas may have done something like this. I don't know where they stand now, though.
