Hi, all. I have a question. I am debating Excelsior for the LPN to RN program and wondered if I went on to be a NP, how would I do this through them with clinicals being a must for a NP. Any suggestion?

Also, clarify something for me. I thought Excelsior didn't use books, they only used study guides for their students. This is what i was told today when I called. Please clarify for me.

EC has text books that they recommend to help past their test. Their is also a content guide that you can download or get mailed to you that is about 40-50 pages that tells you what chapter to read out of the recommended text.

I think your confused about notes like studygroup 101 and Lisa Arends. They were former students that put together notes to help you study for the test.

Knowledge Re: Excelsior microbiology-lisa arends
Hi, I too am considering excelsior for LVN to RN and am considering becoming a nurse practioner someday as well. I've read on this site that it will cost a lot more to go thru the College Network bc they make you buy their books and that it is better to go straight thru Indiana University's long distance. I am actually not sure how to do this but if I find out I will let you know. To be an NP I believe requires grad school and I am not sure what the grad schools require or which one you want to attend. Where do you live? Also I am going to ask people in Human Resources that hire RNs if they would hire an RN who graduated from an online program. I have heard that excelsior gives an intense weekend of clinicals( which you are even tested on) plus their students are already LVNs so to me it seems fine. However no matter how much I tell this to friends including an RN and an EMT they tell me their hospital will NOT hire anyone who got their RN online, because they do not feel they had enough hands on experience. No offense to anyone who goes there and I really doubt most hospitals feel this way but I am very leary after attending a horrible school that did Not prepare me well to be an LVN let me tell you it is an awful feeling to get hired at your first job having to constantly beg other nurses (many of whom are either too overwhelmed by their own patients or just don't care to help especially a stranger they just met) to show you a skill you either never got to do in clinical or did not do enough to do without any guidance. Sorry I ranted a little there but maybe it will give you or anyone reading some perspective........ If I find that good hospitals WILL hire online RN grads I may go there but I will also make sure I find a way to get a ton of RN skill practice. If you would like, I will keep you posted with any more info I get. Good Luck!

Although, I have heard good things about Excelsior, I am still a little weary also of a hospital not hiring me because of the clinical experience. I also am concerned with me not getting enough of clinical experience to move on to my NP. I am so glad that someone else has the same concerns. Please keep me posted. I am curious to find whether hospitals will hire an RN with online experience. I will also check with the local hospitals here in Huntington, WV. I do know that Excelsior said that if the Bon accepts them, that the local hospitals would.
