Mandatory flu shots????

It didn't dawn on me until just right now, don't ask me why, that my choice of NOT getting a flu shot will NOT get me into a nursing program. The director at my school of choice basically stated "it is a requirement that you receive one, however you can sign a declaration that you do not wish to receive one." Then I asked, "would that inhibit my chances of getting into the program?" She replied, "well, the facilities in which we work with it is required due to you working with elderly clients; If you do not wish to get the flu shot perhaps you should look into another career."

*****?? (excuse the language) I have worked in nursing homes, health centers, private duty, home health agencies, visiting nurses association, hospice AND THEY NEVER REQUIRED me to ever receive or even ASKED if I have obtained a flu shot!!! (mid 90's)

So, anyone please tell me my dream of becoming a nurse is already dead because I REFUSE to get a flu shot???!!! seriously??? I am so upset right now!!!

That is only a part of it. I habe other reasons. But basically I don't believe them to be effective and I do not like the idea of being forced to inject myself with a substance I do not believe is controlled very well.

Then IMHO, if you don't believe in EBM/research and western medicine you no longer need to be a nurse. There is so much medical literature and basics ethics that contradicts what you believe in that has the ability for you to cause irreparable harm to so many people your hospital would actually be ethically negligent to continue your employment if you continue to refuse the flu shot based on your misguided beliefs.

You are entitled to your opinion, but not all nursing is main stream. Not all nurses believe in all medications. And American main stream nursing isnt the only way nurse. You may have being a nurse confused with being brainwashed by pharma.

The vaccine prevents a few thousand deaths per year, the inactivated vaccine cannot give you the flu, the level of ongoing monitoring of the safety of the vaccine is far beyond that of medications. The reason why it's more stringently monitored is that unlike regular medications where the person benefiting from the medication is also the one taking on the risk, those that need to protected the most from the flu rely on the rest of us to reduce the potential for it's spreading to them, so you're not making a decision that affects primarily you, you're deciding whether or not others should live or die.

This is one of the loopier posts I've seen here in quite a while. People "believe" all kinds of odd things -- that doesn't make those beliefs true. While nursing may not be "all mainstream," I would hope that nurses at least practice and promote practices and treatments that are evidence-based.

And what on earth is your conspiracy theory about Bill Gates? There are plenty of vaccines that have been around, and recommended/promoted by healthcare professionals, since before Bill Gates was born. If you're going to make a sweeping statement like that, it would behoove you to provide some documentation. I'm not inclined to take your word for anything at this point.

I don't see anything in the definition of nursing by the ANA or ICN that states it's ok to endanger patients based on beliefs in conspiracies or through a lack of scientific understanding.

History 101:

Jenner came out with the small pox vaccine/inoculation in the 1790s. The first uses of small pox inoculation can be traced back 200BC.

The next wide use vaccine was in 1880s for rabies. There were multiple vaccines released in the 1950s with the most notable being polio. The 1960s saw the release of the measles vaccine.

Bill Clinton was born in 1946. Bill Clinton - Wikipedia

Planned parenthood came into being in 1946 with origins in 1916. Planned parenthood is concerned with women's health and reproductive rights.

FYI: Neither Clinton or planned parenthood had nothing to do with the advent of vaccines.

I actually read about this one when one of my antivax friends seared toward it. I basically postulate the recent reduction in birth rates in some African countries where coincidentally the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation has been promoting vaccinations for children and adults is actually part of a diabolical plan to sterilize Africa and prevent anymore African babies from being born you can find it on Snopes.com which debunks it and show the source to be a well known purveyor of fake news.

But then again Bill Gates may also be a whacky interdementional time traveler for all we know.:roflmao:
