Hurricaine Matthew Relief: Who's Going?

  1. Currently, my wife and I are travel nurses in Oregon. But I'm going to try and adjust our contract somehow with the hospital to take some time off for the hurricane relief effort in Florida.

Anyone else heading down there as well?

Which agency or organization should I connect with?

I'm not licensed in Florida but under the circumstances I would imagine any help would be appreciated.

I've always wanted to help with an event like this. The fallout is going to be catastrophic.

    Who's with me?

Call your local Red Cross chapter and they can tell you what the needs are, process for volunteering, training, etc. Teams will be sent in from all over the country.

I am a disaster responder with my local Red Cross. I volunteered to go to SC. Waiting for them to contact me about deployment.

I have a question though...as a newly licensed nurse who wants to keep her license...I'm not allowed to identify as a nurse, right? I'm not licensed in South Carolina, so I cannot claim to be a nurse? Though they did ask for nurses. I'm sure I'm nitpicking at my nurse practice act.

You should ask the Red Cross about this. When I went with the Red Cross following Katrina, I was not licensed in LA and neither were many of the nurses. They made exceptions...in writing....that all licensed nurses would be permitted to practice as nurses. But....if they do not have this in place..in writing...they have plenty to do for volunteers of all kinds.

By the way, if you are in MD.....I am guessing this due to your profile....MD is a nursing compact state as is SC. This may make things easier.
