What were they thinking?? (cath placement)

  1. I just couldn't believe it. Last week I saw a patient who had a cath RIGHT NEXT TO HIS COLOSTOMY! Talk about flirting with sepsis! :uhoh21:

Anyone ever seen anything like this? I just couldn't get over that one. The nurse that was doing the dressing change was sweating bullets trying to be super careful. Seems like the dumbest place to put a cath.

Some times we have to think, they call it end stage renal disease for a reason. Atleast that is how I deal with situations in my head. (Last ditch effort?)

I can't count the number of kiddos I have taken care of whos PD ports were next to their GT and vesicostomy.

I agree, I think it has to do with a limited area to insert a port that has to be placed.

I have encountered a patient with pd catheter and he had a vp shunt...it did not work in the long run...hemodialysis catheter was placed...another patient had transhepatic hemocatheter, the last resort , but no colostomy...
