Been a Davita nurse (in GA) and happily so for the past two years. Worked agency with other companies, wouldn't waste my time with them. Davita is a good company BUT it has developed more of a "bottom line" mindset the past year or so than it had when I first started. That said...staffing ratios are pretty much set by the individual state. Here in GA it's 4/1 caregiver, 10/1 Nurse (not direct, just a nurse in house per 10 chairs running) and RN in house at all times that patients are receiving care. I have floated to other Davita clinics within the state as well and have found that each center has its own individual quirks and some are great to work in, and some are just awful. Just depends --- I like the company, the benefits and profit-sharing are wonderful, and I am paid based on my years of nursing experience, not my years of dialysis experience. Unfortunately, like everywhere else in healthcare, it would appear that there are some really clueless people out there making clinical decisions (policies and procedures) based on theory and conjecture rather than on actual input from the caregivers themselves regarding what works in reality and what doesn't. But that's everywhere you go. If it's the company you want to know about, I say go for it...just make sure the center itself is a place you want to be. But as far as Davita itself as a company, let me tell ya...nowhere else in my 16 years as an RN have I been as fulfilled in my job and in my role and the support system that I receive as I have been here. Even if I am stretched too thin sometimes.

    Good luck whatever you decide!

Yep, she said it all! Davita is a great company...I have been with them since 98...and don't plan on leaving, ever.

Davita runs the inpatient dialysis at this hospital I work at, and also runs many of the outpatient clinics. The Davita nurses seem to really love their jobs...

Well my company (Gambro) just got bought out by Davita so I hope its a good company.

Our current acute compensation is superb(I average around 40/hour) I hope they dont try to change that or screw up my benefits or 401k

benefits are the main reason I stay...even with a crappy boss! LOL We have a great mission...and fantastic core values... Service Excellence, Integrity, Team, Continuous Improvement, Accountability, Fulfillment, and FUN!

You can get lots of info at their site, www.davita.com

To Gambro employees, you will love our CEO, Kent Thiry...he is sooooo cool, down to earth, and is WONDERFUL! He meets ALL employees. Plan on some major changes...we have a couple of computer programs that are fantastic, but were quite a change from what we used to do. All the bugs have been worked out, so you will love it if you give it a chance! PM me if you have other questions!

I think it's going to be interesting to see how this buyout plays out. It merges two really large companies....will they look at Gambro's computer stuff (their online purchasing program is FAR superior to Davita's iprocurement, for example) -- will they perhaps utilize the best of both worlds or will it all go exactly "The Davita Way" as it stands? I think we're all in for a ride here.

Interestingly enough, I'm currently a perdiem teammate with Davita after leaving for a while...(hey we all need a change of scenery once in a while) but was approached about a CD position with Gambro. Less than 24 hours before my interview for that position I learned of the buyout. So Monday I become a Gambro CD and prepare to lead a possibly anxious team of nurses and PCTs into the new and unfamiliar (to them) world of Davita. And I believe it will be a very positive move. Davita believes firmly in its core values, as do I, it's NOT lip-service, and for those of you Gambro folks - i hope you know how to laugh - What nosonew didn't tell you about Kent Thiry is that he likes the three musketeers and he likes star wars. CQI people when certified are "Jedi Knights" and you WILL see Kent in his big feathered hat and holding his sword shouting "All for One - One for All"......

And the profit-sharing in the form of bonuses is nice too. In the rural GA area, at least, Davita pays MUCH better than Gambro since they do pay based on years of nursing experience and not years of dialysis experience. I don't yet know if that will mean a raise or what will happen to salaries but I really don't believe it's in Davita's general belief system to go cutting salaries. And 401ks rollover anyhow. That's the benefit of a 401k. They're portable.

Good luck to you all as we ride this wave!

Another question about Davita - how long is their orientation period and what does it consist of?? For the class room end of things, is it done locally at your own clinic or do you have to fly to their main head quarters or somewhere for it??

Most of your initial training is in your local unit. At some point you go to Davita Academy.. Depends where you go.. Some from NC went to LA..It's more of a rah rah Davita cheerleading school than "training'. It's learning to do it the "Davita" way...

Davita staffs lean on the Nursing side of things. I just declined a CD job with Gambro because they wanted to decrease the nursing staff from 1:15 to 1:30.. Seems they are already in the Davita mode. That may be why you get all these great bonuses..Sorta you can pay me now or you can pay me later.. Gambro offered my a CD position in Baltimore that was low paying with a 15000 bonus.. That is if I turn things around. It's not guaranteed. And now Gambro has offered me a CM in another unit in Baltimore for more money than the CD position in the same city.. Things that make ya go hmmmmmmmmm..Same size units BTW..

Gambro has it all over Davita or Fresenius in the computer area. No chasing charts..Although Fresenius will be bringing out a new system in 2006. Probably in the nick of time. I think they should keep Gambro charting aspect of computer.

It will be real fun to watch the Davita/Gambro vs. Fresenius thingy over the next couple of years.
