AYUDA -- Traveling for Diabetes

by egv08

Has anyone heard of AYUDA? It stands for American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad. The program sends volunteers to communities affected by diabetes in countries like Ecuador and Bolivia. They educate children at these summer camps -- and their families -- on how to properly care for their disease. Although it's a big commitment, I've been interested in doing this for a summer.

Does anyone have any experience traveling outside the US to do volunteer work in poorer countries? Was it a good experience? Bad?
