Job searching & looking for inside opinions

Hi, Can Delaware workers tell me about your hospital. I will be a new grad (RN) in May and am interested in updated info about the hospitals in New Castle County. I am interested in Med-surg to start. Can you tell me about St. Francis, Christiana, AI, and even Union if anyone in DE works there. If there is any I missed please tell me about it. Is the environment pleasant, do they treat their nurses good, what is the starting salary, would you recommend it?

Thanks so much

I work at Christiana as a tech right now and am considering taking a position as a nurse when I graduate. I am very happy there. With most facilities, employee satisfaction varies greatly unit to unit. The medical floors are good places to start, though I would avoid 5B - I've heard nothing but bad things about the staff, patient care, etc. There are surgical, cardiac and medical stepdown floors which are much more challenging if that is something you are looking for. Benefits are great. Lots of opportunity for advancement and new experiences on different floors. It pays the highest salary within the area that I have found, though it is important to look at other factors to consider. Nurse Recruiters can be very difficult to get in touch with, though the one at Wilmington Hospital is great. They are putting millions of dollars into expanding Wilmington Hospital over the next several years. I would say it is definitely worth taking a look at!

As for the other hospitals you mentioned, I have no experience working in those locations.

I am trying to avoid working in town, but it is definitely an option. Thanks for your response. I have also found the recruiters difficult to reach, I know their very busy. I guess I'll keep trying. Thanks.

I'm having a lot of trouble finding a job in Delaware. I'm graduated from UD in May and took (and passed) my NCLEX 3 weeks ago and keep getting rejection emails saying I don't have enough experience. Does anyone have any advice or contact info for recruiters at christiana, wilmington, st fran etc? I'm getting very discouraged.

Hospital My advice to you:
Meg,

Take it from me. Start applying in other hospitals before it's too late. I worked at Christiana for 2 years and they couldn't even offer me a job. Not even a part-time job. Nothing. A few girls on my unit have had success with applying to Union and Salem. The minute I started applying to PA, NJ, MD hospitals, I received an offer. DE is soooo small and I really feel as though you have to know the right person to get in.

If you wait for Christiana, St. Francis or Wilmington, you could be waiting for a loooog time. My Nurse Manager told me that the longer a new grad waits to get into a hospital, the less likely she and other NMs are to hire them. In a few months, you're going to be competing with December 2009 grads, in fact, most of them have started applying for and receiving job offers. Don't hold out for DE hospitals, there are just too few slots and too many of us. Good luck!!

Could you please tell us which state did you get a job?

The job market for new grads in NJ is definitely terrible, heard PA is no good either.

My classmate's been an LPN for many years in a nursing home here in NJ. Guess what? even the nursing home she works cannot hire her as an RN. She still works as an LPN there even she passed NCLEX-RN two months ago.

Don't get discouraged about how long it has been since you passed your boards. The nurse managers and recruiters understand its difficult to get a job right out of school and they won't hold it against you.
