let me just start out by saying I am not too happy with CT schools since they changed their admission rules. I had started taking classes back in 2005 but had to stop due to being pregnant and on top of that, I was having twins. So I didnt start back to January of 2008, and I was devastated. Now they are telling me I have to take Chemistry, because it's been more than 5 years( I am 32 y/o terefore high school was a really long time ago), I have to take a computer class, which I hear is very basic. Anyone know how if there is a way to test out of it? Has anyone taken it? And I have to take Intermediate Algebra. I have all my general Ed requirements done, except for Micr (taking this fall) and English II and Sociology(also taking this fall), so now for me to attend a CT school like capital it seems I have to go in reverse and take these other classes, which I can do but I dont want to delay anymore. The good news is that I have looked at MA, Springfield to be exact and STCC has a great nursing program without needing those extra classes I really don't want to have to do these other classes due to wanting to start Nursing in the fall of 2009. I did take an online medications calc class and got an A and I hoped that capital would take it for the Algebra. But they refused to listen to me. Let me just say my experience with Capital has not been good. They are very rude! Stcc has ben very helpful and informative and only a 15 minute ride. I wish I could have the option of bridgeport hosp but with the commute and having 2 little kids it isnt feasable. I am also looking at Holyoke Comm College too. SO my plan is to hopefully get into either STCC or HCC in the fall of 2009.
Good luck everyone!
Angela
Hey Angela,
There is an option to test out of the computer class, I believe it is offered at Gateway. You'll need to contact that department to schedule a test. I have heard by the admissions director it is very difficult. It includes all computer programs, including access, which I have no experience with. I looked into the STCC, but the Hesi and the math for nursing kinda threw me, I am still researching though. And I am in New Britain so I know what you mean about the BHSON commute but my Grandmother went there, she was a nurse for 35-40 years before she died, and she said it was the best school in the state. Now I am sure times may have changed but I think I would accept the long commute. I actually go to church every sunday and bible class every wednesday in Bridgeport. Although I am hoping if I get in, I can find a car pool, or even city bus part of the way. :chuckle
Good luck though on the route you choose. Oh yeah and twins ... I have 1 and I can't imagine doubling that. :chuckle

Re: CT Colleges Ready to apply for 2009!!
Thanks Deanna, I am going to look into testing out. I talked to my cousin today who took that class and she is going to look for the book for me so maybe I can study up on it before I take it. You should really look at STCC, the HESI was not bad at all. I got an 80% without studying and without A & P II yet either. The math, English, and vocab were so easy. I scored in the 90's for those. It was the A&P and Bio that hurt me because I havent had BIO in years and i hadnt taken tA & P II yet. They only require a 77%. You dont have to take Chem at STCC so you just skip that part. I was happy about that. I really want to get into STCC, but i need a back up plan if i don't. I know, I wish I could go to Bridgeport too, it's just so far it would be impossible for me to do. Why cant there be a hosp closer. I remember when St francis had a nursing program. I think Hartford Hosp did too! Oh well.
Can you test out of the math class, Is that a basic math class? So if I could test out of the comp class and math class, al lI would need to take is chemistry and that wouldnt be so bad then. Hmm I need to start making some phone calls

Actually I think you can test out of math if you place at or higher than MA136 in the accuplacer exam. Hey things are looking up for you.
Have you taken the math requirement for STCC? Math for nursing students?

Re: CT Colleges Ready to apply for 2009!!
Hey Ir,
I am taking computers intro at Clovis this fall. They have 2 online classes, one is 8 weeks and the other is 16 weeks. Check it out. See if they will take it and if you can, take the 8 week one. (to get it over with and on a transcript ASAP) I got an A in A&P I this summer!! YEAH!! oh and if you do want to take Eng 101 again, they have a class at clovis (I think they have a 8 week on that on too) You are right tho, its crazy to take it over... Really, like didnt you prove your English writing skills with Eng 102?? These schools are just full of themselves. I truly think if you have all your prereqs, you consider Doreathea Hopster in Mt. Vernon, NY. There evening/weekend classes start in January and the application is due sept 5th. Go to the web site and at least look at it. Cochran is taking apps too.. they are in yonkers, NY. I cant WAIT to get where you are now.... I might even go to New Mexico if I dont get anywhere with these northern schools.....

Re: CT Colleges Ready to apply for 2009!!
Hi Angela,
First you deserve ....you have not give up your dream!! I am one of those. Every school has their own regulations, but as you mentioned CT is kind of universal. However I must said you must follow your heart. I went to NVCC waterbury, and I was very upset due to that they asked me to re-take a basic english class 101...when I've been taken the class, and got a C. I took this class at Norwalk CC. back 1999 starting college and I admited could it done a better job. however I took english 102 and got a B. so why make me re-take, basic class..???
I went to norwalk CC. today and I sat down with a nursing counselor, and she did not make any remark about my english 101, actually she gave me a compliment, for the hard work I had put on, and encouraged me to keep taking class to get my BSN. the only class I have to take if I decide to stay with Norwalk will be the computer class. works for me...in my opinion the lady from NVCC...was not personal, if you know what i mean!!
Good luck... look others avenues, call, set up appoitments, and always check if they give you credit for what you have worked hard.

Thank you Regi!!
I did look into Norwalk CT college, and they did not gave any problem...honestly, I feel bit offended by the NVCC counselor, but it's OK. I will stay away from that school. I refuse to take a class again if I don't have too. I will also apply to Cochran just waiting the new admission. also Bridgeport Hospital.
we all get there some day!! | | No. 47 |

Hey Regi and all
Actually I did called them, (Cochran) but I was told that they were very busy with the new students coming in from last admission. The lady the I spoke with, was very pleasant and told me to keep calling for new info for 2009 acceptance...so really we just need to be persistent.
Honestly, it's hard to get a hold of the nursing staff in each school. Regi, we here because we know what we want...you are working hard as much as I have.
let me just share with all of you!!
I just drove 24 hours from Hartford CT to Kingsland, GA My hubby is in active duty there. I am tired and sleepy. cannot wait when this is over and get back home for good. FYI....the heat here is horrible...the nursing schools in here are very selective, and not easy to get in.
anyway, I went to CT for a week just to take care my mother-in-law..she's 83...just had a colostomy, and ladies....it was an experiece...thanksfully she will be having a surgery soon to re-attach her colon, the good news was that she is clear of any malignacy. the experience comfirmed once again that I desire to be a good nurse.
thank you all for your support

O.K, I feel discouraged right now. I am applying to SCSU for the Accelerated degrees, of course the applications for the nursing school will be out in Nov. Did they tell you why you did not get in? Was it the GPA?
Did you have all the pre-reqs? Did they interview you?
I want to have a feel of what to expect.
