Beginning Precepting in an ICU

Specialties Critical

Published

This is the third semester of my BSN program and I will be precepting a nurse in the ICU of a local hospital - I didn't get any information on the kind of ICU (i.e. CVICU MICU SICU) . I'm nervous and want to know what lab values I should have memorized- drugs I should know - any tips or hints on learning as much as I can in the ICU would be helpful.

I moved your thread for best response.

They will show you what you need.

Brush up on basics...electrolytes, CBC, cardiac enzymes, the different MI's (anterior, inferior, lateral, posterior) CHF, chest pain protocol. You might want to glance at ACLS protocols and know those drugs.

Thank you this helps! I'll keep looking at it until my first day in the ICU - although I'm not an RN I'm just in school :)

No problem. It's still written for someone with a pretty basic nursing background. I used it extensively during my last semester of my BSN program when I was placed into an ICU with a preceptor.

Specializes in ICU.

"I will be precepting an RN in the ICU." quote

Maybe that was a typo due to nerves but in case it was not, the RN is your preceptor and she will be precepting you.

You don't have to impress us with a lot of knowledge. Just show up on time in a clean

pressed uniform well groomed rested - not hung over- and ready to work. Consider it an extended job interview because that's what it is.
