This aughta be fun: List the terms/slang/correctional nursing lingo for us newbies

Specialties Correctional

i have picked up on some terms as i have been working my way threw each and every thread and response in all 19 pages of this forum. i am very new to corrections, in fact i never even gave it consideration in all of my 20 yrs as a nurse. i have interviewed at our local county jail, and have interviews for our local fl state prison for women and also our local state prison for men (across the road from the female prison).

i have seen words like:

the hole (maximum security???) is that right?

bullpen- what does this refer to?

drunk tank- sounds self explanitory i suppose

disp.- what is that?

i read that "incident reports" (i think) were referred to as 1033, any other numbers that are universal in the practice of corrections? can anyone clarify this? what does your compound call an incident report or a varience?

how many have been propositioned or have seen the male masterbating?

i am not afraid to venture into corrections and would feel very safe with the c/o's present.

so tell me some new terms or words that are specific to correctional nursing and their meaning, so i can build my vocabulary and also know what is been said in orientation, as to not appear stupid.

thanks in advance for your help. this is a very important matter to me, because i want to be 100 percent successful and at least know what my coworkers are talking about, or what it means without asking to many newbie q's and appearing stupid.

I was orienting a nurse in intake last night. I saw the IM just came from DOC to our facility. So, in order to streamline the Q and As, I asked him where he just came from?

His response was, "I just buried my number"

Now, to you and me, that means he finished his sentence at the DOC. Unfortunately for the orienting nurse, she only heard the first 3 words...LOL!

Well, a short explanation was in order, and she soon recovered her composure!

long time prison nurse here

here is the best resource for prison slang

http://members.tripod.com/catchout/dictionary/DICT.html

now....one that you might not find in there, and one that i hear ALOT of in prisons (male prisons, that is) is inmates exclaiming "kill shot"..so lets hear if any of yall know what they mean by that.......(i do, but want to know if it is just a regional thang/texas thang, or widely used throughout the US)

Now that's some interesting reading! Just thought I'd post and say I know the reason biscuits were called Cat Heads... our older generation uses the same slang here in WV. Seems the scratch made dough was harder than our store-bought type, and was "pinched off" from the doughball and slapped onto the pan, almost like a hershey's kiss. Once baked and puffed up, the shape resembled cat heads looking up at the ceiling.

Now ya know... LOL...

Every state is different. We still use "10 Codes" and "Signals Codes"

"ATW" - "All The Way" being released

"Hooch" - ETOH made from fermented fruit

"Burrito" - Ramen Noodles, Doritoes, hot sauce all crushed together in water in which several I/M's eat off off (enough to cause cardiac arrest!)

A kite, in our facility, is a note that an inmate is passing to another inmate.

The hole is the same as disciplinary isolation (separated from others for discipline problems).

He-she - self explanatory. Never chart this. =)

Red death - a meal that has a reddish colored gravy on it. I don't think it's caused any deaths, though.

Isn't the shimmer in the rainbow meat caused by it being kind of old??? Old, but not spoiled?

Lots more...can't think right now. =)

jack mack.......a VERY common thing bought in the commissary. something i have never seen anyone buy or eat except when i have worked in the prison systems, but i know it exists outside of prison, cuz i have seen it on the grocery shelf ha ha! who else buys it but inmates??

I worked at TDC for about 15 years (corrections: seg, death row, mental health, mrop). I've many times seen inmates make sandwiches of jack mack, ramen noodles, chili, and god knows what else. Man, that crap stinks. Heh, "spreads".

Jack mackeral itself isn't too bad. I grew up eating it...mom would mix it with corn meal and fry it in patties. Mmm.

Couldn't eat it raw like the inmates do, though.
