We had something very interesting the other night at work. We had an inmate that they first told us that he "fell off his bunk" you know the old line. Well he got over to our office and the inmate had been assaulted and they had forced the side of his head against the bed frame and lacerated the pinnia in half.... he had numerous lacerations around his ear....it was one of the wierdest emergencies I have seen in the 13+ years that I have worked in corrections....

The main reason that I started this thread except for the fact that this area of nursing bb has been really slow lately is.... what companies that supply traveling nurses have postions for correctional nurses... They are talking about closing some prisons in my state and I am not sure where they are going to make me go to work so I was thinking about going back to traveling. But I haven't been able to find any agencies that do our type of nursing. Any help would be greatly apprieciated. We have a couple of months but I would like to get started on this.. I know that they are out there cause I met a traveling nurse at the last national ACHSA conference. Thanks in advance and hope that everyone is doing well.:roll

I can't believe it never "clicked" with me where you are, I'm about 250 miles west of you...I just ran across a couple of agencies a few weeks ago that did prison/jail nursing, I'll look for them and get you the links. If I don't get back to you in the next week PM me with a reminder.

there is a critical shortage of RNs in Corrections out here in California. I work at a prison and the RNs recently got a decent pay raise and benefits. So come on out to sunny California, we sure need you! :-)

I would expect that one of the major limitations of correctional facilities' utilizing agency nurses is the fact that each jurisdiction has its own security clearance procedures and requirement.

Even moving from San Francisco to San Diego, as I have done for example, requires a new, and quite different (SD requires a lie-detector test!) security clearance. For Reno, the security questionnaire was at least 15 pages long (I threw it away), and asked things like "all the magazines to which you subscribe"!

Weird, but I think you can see the problems this kind of thing would cause for an agency.

Nevada doesn't use agency nurses, let alone travelers, for corrections. Our agency contract expired last July and was not renewed. Vacant shifts are being covered by per diem nurses or, that failing, the supervisor on call.
