some info on nursing in corrections, please

Hi there everyone. I am a first yr student nurse--loving every minute of it so far:roll , especially since i finished my finals today--yippee! Anyway, I really had never considered corrections nursing until I just happened upon this forum. My mother works in corrections in Illinois as a counselor (paper-pusher). I was wondering if someone could give me a little info about this area of nursing? I read a little about the pay scales, benefits and such, but was wondering what a typical day is like for a corrections nurse. Illinois is currently building a max security mens prison about 20 miles from where I live and is supposed to be up and running around the time I graduate. Any info will be appreciated.

I assume you have read the many related threads on this forum already.

The best way to learn what it feels like is to talk to medical at any of your local jails and prisons to see if you would be able to visit and be given a "chat and tour." All the reading and hearing about it in the world can't convey what it feels like when the bars are slammed shut behind you.

I agree with the note above but also you might talk to your administration of your school. Many schools are going into the prisons and working as part of your clinical in community health. We have students here lots of time and they really like thier clinical here. It would really show you what we do in this field.
