Correctional Nursing Shop Talk - Input Needed

by LorrySchoenlyRNPhD Premium Member

Hi, Folks: I'm trying to expand my list of corrections specific terms and acronyms for my blog and was wondering if you could help. What words or abbreviations would be unfamiliar to a nurse new to the field. So far I have things like cheeking, kite, CO, KOP, DOT, and a few more.

Any help you can provide is appreciated and will help newbies to our specialty. Just in case your term is new to me, too (some terms are regional or system-specific) please also provide a brief description.

Much appreciated,
Lorry

I just started at a new gig. They use the terms OPM (On Person Med) and AWO (all the way out). Just two news ones I have heard in the last few days. I am sure I will hear more.

"catch a case"

Purposefully getting into trouble. A DR inmate is trying to do this at our facility so prolong his death sentence. He is unpredictable- and one of the scariest men ever I've ran into.

  • Books: An inmate's money account at the prison to buy certain items at the store, stamps, co-pays for medical.
  • Breakfast: Legal speed, like coffee, mt. dew, yellow jackets. Always ask them when they come in around 10am and are tachy!
  • Dirty-dickin': As a payback to staff -rubs their penis over something you have to put in your mouth- coffee cup, unused envelope flap. Always watch your coffee mugs!
  • Keister: To put contraband up one's rectum. Important to know because these guys often come to medical for x-rays, etc.
  • Punked: The receiving end of a homosexual relationship or an inmate who has been raped.
  • STG: Security threat groups (gangs)
  • "Sweets" or "sisters": openly homosexual inmates who are feminine. They are often sexual with a lot of other inmates- they come into the clinic for testing every 3 months or so.
  • Ticket: A report writing up an inmate for breaking the rules.
These are the terms that medical hears the most.

You guys are the best! I'll be updating my ShopTalk page and referencing my friends over at allnursses.com/correctional-nursing

Keep adding to this thread if you come up with other terms. You'll be helping newbies in our specialty to get up to speed quickly.

Regards,
Lorry

I just thought of some more...

Escorting a 10-15 or body=escorting an inmate (alive, not dead, usually :x)

Correctional officers will often refer to inmates by race, especially in California. "I'm escorting one black 10-15 . . ." It's because we have to segregate the races to prevent fighting.

"Lock it up"=told by C.O's to inmate when the inmates need to get back in their cells

'Yard down"=medical or custody incident on the yard, so inmates have to get down on the ground, either sitting or prone depending on your institution

"Mandown"=called by custody or c.o. for inmate suffering from an urgent or emergent (or fake) medical problem that requires medical/nursing staff to report to yard or housing unit or cell to evaluate and transport "mandown" inmate to medical clinic or emergency room

Not sure which ones you have but here are a few that I am familiar with
AD-SEG: Administration Segregation (for the bad kids who fight, cause disturbances, danger to others etc, etc)
SNU-Special Needs Unit or SHU Special Housing Unit (this can be older population, openly gay, sex offenders, people who drop from gangs...basically anyone who has no chance of survival in general population)
Code Brown: My all time fave which is the code for having to take a poop
Code Red: Lock Down No Movement
