I am a new LVN working med/surg in California and I was just offered a job to work through a contractor at our local state prison (max. security) for $33/hr. 8 hour shifts. I am tempted as I only get $14.99 at our hospital, but I am fearful of the environment, etc. Can any one experienced put my mind at ease? I am in school to get my RN so I would only do two shifts a week? Thanks.

If you have about 1 year med/surg background, give it a shot. Also read all the information on this site. Good luck.

Hey just an ups I was on Delphi forums tonight and I saw that there is a travel staffing company paying corrections RN's like sixty bucks an hour.No kidding. The LPN's are getting 32.00 and hour. Its not the only company I have seen do this either.I got on TNT Recruiting Board and put in a search for LPN jobs and it came up.Hope this is a blessing.

California Correctional Nursing, I have heard, pays the highest wages. They also use Agency but I am not familiar with which one.

When these high wages are quoted, it is because of overtime which is plentiful. Try doing the math; when you owrk over 60 hours, you get double time.

Hey they did have some jobs in Northern Cal listed which I have heard is one of the most beautiful places to be.Plus you get alot of perks like same day
medical and an apartment and gas money etc.If the pay is good you can maybe do only two three month assignments a year and be free for the
other six months.

I'm a agency LVN working in a california prison.
I make 42/hr, i take home $5000 a month without OT.
outside of the prison, for a hospital i would make about 20-25/hr. For a hospital thru a agency, maybe $30/hr.
state prison LVN's make about $4000 a month, so as a agency worker, i make about $2000 more a month then them.
My girlfriend who is a RN in the bay area makes less than me, i'm waiting to take my RN boards in a few weeks, so if i leave the prison system, i will actually make less as a RN then i do as a LVN, but if i stay, prison RNs get 100K....and that is as a state RN, with benefits!!!
I said i would never do a job because of money, but for 100K i'm so tempted even though the prison job is brainless and unrewarding and can be dangerous and nurses have been assaulted here, and many threatend by shot callers.

I am a new grad, I just took a job as a RN at a Correctional Institute in WI through a staffing agency and am starting at $23/hr with a review in 90 days where they said I'd most likely get a raise. (I hope that's true). Is this a good starting rate? They asked me how much I was expecting...I've never negotiated wages before so I am not sure if they were/are paying me well or not?

Anyone know what new grads get at correctional facilities? Many of you sound as though you've been working there for a while. Also, anyone in WI know what new grad hospital RNs are starting at?

I've seen you post this several times and, it's not completely accurate. Yes, the maximum pay raise approved by the court is $97K for all but three facilities in the Bay Area, where the pay for those facilities is higher with the higher COL ...

BUT ... that's the maximum pay rate. You don't start at that rate. At most facilities you actually start at $7K a month ... which is nothing to complain about but, it's not $97K to start.

Read the corrections bulletin updated as of December 19 of this year.

http://www.cya.ca.gov/CareerOpportun...urseCF-O-C.pdf

The $97K doesn't kick in until you qualify for the maximum pay rate, presumably after you put some time in.

Again, I think there's some misinformation here. The state of California is actually trying to cut back on the overtime and agency nurses in general, which is how they're going to pay for the court ordered raises starting at $7K a month for RN's.

Because of the pay raises, staff vacancies rates have dropped from 39 percent to 15 percent so, that in and of itself probably tells you there's less overtime.

And I've read the union contract: if you're a staff RN you don't get double time unless it's holidays. Maybe it's different for agency but, it seems unlikely. Also: people tend to forget that the agency takes a big chunk of that money ... the RN doesn't see all of it.
