Ready to Apply CT Community Colleges- Nursing Program 2012

U.S.A. Connecticut

Published

ooops... The other one had 2011 instead of 2012... let's try this again:

Just thought I would start a new thread for the current application cycle. Questions... stats... rumors... etc!

My question is... for those applying this cycle, how did you do on the TEAS V? Since this is the first year they are using this test, it would be nice to see how everyone is doing.

(Please don't post TEAS 3 or TEAS 4 results, as the scores are NOT comparable with the TEAS V.)

Mssjez, nursewannabe thanks guys, yeah I better play it safe, I'll just show them my CPR card when I go for orientation if they say I need to get a new one then I'll just sign up for the ones at NVCC. Better safe than sorry! :-)

@CNAnursingstudent: exactly, just show it to them at orientation, but make sure you still have plenty of time to do the class in case you have to, so keep a back-up plan!I just bought 2 pairs of sneakers at Walmart for $12 each, they're not leather though, I'll show them to them at the orientation to see if they're ok. I don't know what kind of shoes we exactly need lol but they're so cheap! And I want to have 2 pairs, just in case 1 gets damaged and I need them for the next day

I actually got my CPR certificate last week from the red cross... Dummie me I should havd wait 2 more weeks (now I have to renew in 2 years right before our program ends) and I paid $110 instead of $90 at NVCC

I have my CPR from the American Red Cross. The class we need is the one specifically for Health Care Professionals/Professional Rescuer (I believe the American Heart Associate calls it Basic Life Support). It is a different class than regular CPR.

Barnes and Noble and Staples are my two weaknesses for shopping! CNAnursingstudent - what pocket guides did you get?

This is the class I'm taking with the Red Cross : CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers Review

Also, how are you all seeing what books we need? I only saw three?

@saramisu: I got another big fat letter from NVCC last week. Included were 2 papers that listed all the required books with prices and ISBN #. the other paperswere about the health forms, CPR, important dates... Did u get it as well? I know you're not attending NVCC...our orientation is on the 30th of May, earlier than yours

Nursewannabe I recieved mine about a week ago... I'm waiting until orientation to start getting uniforms and we can get our books that day too. This Wednesday I have my physical and an appt to do all my vaccines, ppd, etc. And I'm just holding off on the CPR too. But man was the packet huge! I was overwhelmed with all the things we have to get done!

I'm not sure about the other schools, but CCC requires all white (not even colored logos) leather shoes. They don't allow mesh because liquid can soak through easily. I got all white, leather, non-slip New Balance sneakers on Zappos.com. CCC also didn't send out a book list for us. The books are listed on mycommnet. If you go to search for courses, find our class and hit 'textbook info' it will list them. They show three required text; dosage calc, nurses guide, and a bundle. Of course the bundle doesn't show what books are included in it. If you go to the bookstore and look up the class it also has 3 recommended books. Those are the ones I was finding at Barnes and Noble so that if I need them, I can run out and get them.

I have a question if anyone knows the answer and I need to vent.

How many people applied this last year total?

The reason I am asking is because a PCA at work yesterday was giving advice to a new girl that starts at one of the programs in the fall. I overheard most of the conversation and wasn't happy with what she was telling people. She said there were 1600-1800 applicants each just for NVCC and CCC, that only half of the class size is placed on the wait list (I know this is false), she had the schedules all wrong, she thought if you applied to three schools you end up on three different waiting lists (also false). I don't think the person listening to her believed her, I hate it when bad information is being shared. The thing that set me off though was this PCA complained about one school in particular stating that half the class failed the second test and nobody studies in groups. This is when I stepped in and informed her that she needs to take a nursing school test before she judges any one, it's really hard. You only need a 73 to fail and it happens to the best of us. I know people in the school she was referring to and I know they study together. It made me mad to hear someone who wasn't accepted bad mouthing others and the program she is attempting to get into.

sorry had to get that off my chest 102 sucked the life out of me and this lady got on my last nerve. I'm good now...

I know CCC had 400 applicants this year. I heard this from a few professors. Another student told me that NVCC had 600 applicants this year. Those are the only two schools I have numbers for. I'm not sure about the others, but I'm 99% sure they were less. Congrats on finishing your first year!

Thought I would let people know, allheart.com is having a sale! I just got a stethescope for $20 off! Check it out :)

LOL! There is NO WAY NVCC had 600 applications this year, are you crazy?!?! I know of someone who got accepted with a 3.5 GPA, if there really were 600 applications, they would only have to accept students with GPAs 3.8 and over! And by the way...I asked advisors at the school. This year, they had 350 applications, and 333 last year (the year before I applied, so Fall 2011). out of those 333 of last year, 111 were ineligible right away, and 222 were left to rank. This year there were 350, so slightly more than last year.

I'm sorry to hear that she annoyed you, it's always best not to listen to people, but ask the experts (teachers, advisors...) and don't forget, there always will be jealous people, even friends, who are just jealous (even if they don't like nursing). plus don't forget, it really is an HONOR to be accepted into one of the CT community colleges for the nursing program! Don't be annoyed! And 1600 applications for NVCC hahahaha that's probably more than people who live in Waterbury lol.
