Ready to Apply CT Community Colleges- Nursing Program 2012

U.S.A. Connecticut

ooops... The other one had 2011 instead of 2012... let's try this again:

Just thought I would start a new thread for the current application cycle. Questions... stats... rumors... etc!

My question is... for those applying this cycle, how did you do on the TEAS V? Since this is the first year they are using this test, it would be nice to see how everyone is doing.

(Please don't post TEAS 3 or TEAS 4 results, as the scores are NOT comparable with the TEAS V.)

As far as CPR certification goes, you have until September 1st to get certified. I am also planning on handing in a copy of my card with my health form.

@mssjez, I thought the books were going to be more outrageous than that as well...but then again, this semester is only one class. I'm sure as we move along there will be more opportunites to expand our personal libraries! I'm looking forward to hear what current/past CCC students say about the supplemental study guides.

Personally for me going to NVCC for the past three years I've had a problem every fall for my loan. They always threaten me that they will cancel my classes if I don't pay or they loose all my info, or they just pretty much forget I exist. I've paid all my fees already and applied for my loan. Every year I end up going to financial aid and fighting with them. So my plan for this year is to go to financial aid asap and settle everything, they will contact your loan company to make sure they distribute your loan on time. To be extra safe, contact the loan company yourself and make sure they send it before the due date. It's such pain every year! I'm so nervous that they are gonna screw something up! :-(

I registered! Yay! I think we have til July (first maybe) to pay for the semester. I was waiting for a grant to go through and it was just applied! Now I just have to pay the difference. They might give us info about CPR classes at orientation. I don't remember if the letter said when we needed to be certified by. I did mine already by going on American Red Cross' website and signing up for the class listed in the Infopacket and Nursing Handbook. Also, if you have loans you're waiting on, I would communicate with your loan company and financial aid. I know my loan company doesn't distrubute any loans until August.

@saramisu - you were right to hand in the health form on the 8th floor. I spoke to registrar and the counselor the other week and they both said it needs to go to the nursing secretary.

Does anyone know if I can just hand them a copy of my CPR Certification when I hand in my health form? I stopped by my old work's occ health to get a record of my Tetorifice booster that they gave me in 2009. Now I'm just going to a local walk-in clinic that I've been to a few times (I don't have a PCP) and they said they can do all the titers, a physical, and the TB test. However they told me that there is no titer for Tetorifice, they just need a record of the vaccine. I didn't realize this... is this right?

CCC listed the books for NUR*101 finally. Doesn't look too bad, I though it'd be more expensive than that. I'm not sure about the recommended books by the bookstore though. I've heard that we'll have enough readings to keep us busy without supplemental study guides. Does anyone who is finishing their first year have an opinion on this?

I called the bursars office today, as long as you've paid the student fees, you have until July 17th ti pay the full tuition

Can anyone explain the payment arrangement when you get federal aid?

@ saramisu - yeah, I paid in full when I registered so I don't know how that works. I hope they aren't unreasonable about it, it seems like paying by July should be in plenty of time! Thanks for the confirmation on the flu shot in the fall thing - I was a little worried about that.

Hey guys I just received my nursing package with all the info we need! For NVCC.. I'm super over whelmed with everything we need to get done! But yet I seriously can't wait for school to start in the fall! Can't wait until orientation! :-)

hi imzjackson

sorry it took me so long to respond but i did ask my friend about the style of teaching and she suggested to carry one of the recording devices and to be very punctual for lectures and clinical. Most of the teaching is done by the slide shows but i don't if anything would change when we start. have you heard or received any updates from norwalk recently!

Just wanted to share some exciting things. I got my nursing shoes!! I got all white NewBalance from Zappos.com that are also non slip for around $50-55. Oh the little things that make our day! I also got grades for my classes this semester, A&P II and Micro and I got As in both! So exciting!!! I picked up a book at Barnes and Noble that was about $7 called "Nurse". I heard good things about it and it's really good and interesting so far. Real experiences of a Med-Surg Head Nurse. Definitely recommend it! How is everyone else doing?

Just so you know, if finances are a big issue for you, some of the schools may have donated uniforms for clinical. I know a few of us at Three Rivers donated uniforms that were in reusable condition. (Although I did enjoy burning the stained one in our fire pit)

Congrats on the A&P II and Micro grades, mssjez!! Impressive!! Nice job picking up the shoes already too.

JBMommy, that's awesome that you and your classmates thought of incoming students at TRCC. Kudos!

I found an older "Dosage Calculations" book on half.com for $1.00 ($5 with shipping), so I snagged that. CCC recommends the newest edition, but the one I got is from 2007. I figured the fundamentals wouldn't be any different, so that would at least be good enough until we hear what they say about the books at orientation on 6/15.

Thanks! Smart idea getting an older version of the dosage calc book. I'm sure the calculations are pretty much the same. I know the new version comes with a CD but I'm not sure what's on it. Also, when I was at Barnes and Noble, I went to their Nursing section and took a mental note of what they had for resources. I'm hesitant to buy the recommended books from the books store. I know we're going to have plenty of textbook reading and powerpoint reviewing anyway, and the last thing I want to do is spend money on a book that I don't end up using. But they do have Fundamental Success, and Fluid and Electrolytes Made Incredibly Easy. They have a ton of pocket guides, flashcards, drug guides, etc. And the prices are comparable to Amazon. I figure I'll get the required books and then if I need the supplemental resources to help me with something, I can go pick them up.

Check out this link too... There are some pharm cards which may or may not help us at some point :)

Mssjez, those flash cards are awesome. thank you for posting that. My Sis in law had the hardest time with pharm, this will help a lot and I will start studying these like now:)
