Ready to Apply CT Community Colleges- Nursing Program 2012

U.S.A. Connecticut

ooops... The other one had 2011 instead of 2012... let's try this again:

Just thought I would start a new thread for the current application cycle. Questions... stats... rumors... etc!

My question is... for those applying this cycle, how did you do on the TEAS V? Since this is the first year they are using this test, it would be nice to see how everyone is doing.

(Please don't post TEAS 3 or TEAS 4 results, as the scores are NOT comparable with the TEAS V.)

Hi everyone, this is my first time posting here. I have applied to the program as well, and can't wait to hear if I got in. I would like to wish everyone good luck! I have applied to TRCC & CCC 2nd. The two things I'm worried about most is taking micro while in the program and figuring out how to make enough money to get through school when I leave my full time job. I was wondering if anyone here knows any more detail about TRCC schedule besides the lecture class on Monday's? Im trying to figure out if I should try to keep my job now or find something part time. Thanks for any insight any can provide.

I'm in Micro right now as well and I have to say that it actually isn't as bad as I expected it be. Compared to A&P I & II - it's a breeze. Although I have to admit that my Gen Bio instructor taught with an intense focus on aspects of Microbiology, so a lot of Micro is review with a couple of extra details (thank you Gen Bio instructor!). I have heard that it's generally considered a tough course to do while in the nursing program.. especially if you're also working. I'm not sure if Micro is offered during the summer, but if it is, you may want to consider taking it then.

Livetolearn - If it all possible, I'd try to take it in the summertime. Not only can it be intense, but if you don't take it by the first semester, you can't move forward in the nursing program. I don't think it'd be impossible to take while in the nursing program, but I personally would rather not take it. However, just like anything else, as long as you put time into it, you'll be fine.

I too, am leaving a secure, decently paying full-time job. Some nights, I toss and turn wondering how Im going to make ends meet with part-time work (if i get in). Other times, I have full faith that it will work out. If this is something you truly want to do, it will turn out alright. It has to. It's not going to be easy, but it will be ok.

I have definitely heard that Micro is intense during the programs because you're also taking your core nursing class and clinicals/lab. I'm sure it's doable, otherwise it'd be a requirement for admission. It is the type of class that is as tough as the professor makes it (like most classes). Find out some information on the professors before you sign up and make sure that they present the information in a clear way and previous students did well because of the teaching style. Good luck!! One week!!!

there is a hybrid class at gateway taught my the same proff every summer. the last test is actually online and the class is very easy.

Hello everyone, I'm in 102 at Gateway. We started this semester with 3 pregnant students they are working with all of them. There are 96 spots 48 fall, 48 spring. They ask you where you work because most likely you will not have 101 clinicals where you work. We took a few students off the wait list but not many, they told us 120 did not get in. We are in the new campus in September, Yale donated $500,000 for our program and they are naming the lab area the YNHH nursing suite. It's going to be nice! I wouldn't take micro and nursing together. I think for the most part your second choice will never be an option.

How do you like it, is it as hard as they make it seem "impossible" basically. I applied to GCC as my first choice I'm wondering what you mean about the spring & fall though? You apply once a year than they can accept you to whichever semester they want fall or spring?

Half start in the fall, the other half start in the spring. A&P and Micro were a walk in the park compared to nursing, 101 is a lot easier than 102.

studentnursect - Great, thats awesome;). A&P and Micro gave me nightmares. Oh well, I figured as much. Are clinicals alright? I was reading a post from the woman last year who said it's a dog eat world at clinicals. But, I figure if you're engaged, putting in the time and effort, and taking it seriously, it's got to be ok.

And i'm sure they mean it, but do they REALLY mean it when they say to work part-time? I'm prepared to do so, and I'm going to plan on working 20-25 hours per week ( I currently work 60, probably why a&p and micro feel like they suck up all my time - I have none!) Do you think that amount is pushing it?

@studentnurseCT.. How far along were the pregnant girls in your class. I just found out so I'm pretty nervous about their flexibility. I work in the hospital as a CNA so its going to be pretty easy knowing what my body can and cant do. Also this is not my first pregnancy. I'm not sure if I can do the first semester since I think I'm due November 21. Im only 6 six weeks I think so far.

@yrienay ... im 5 1/2 months preg w my first and almost done w my first year of nursing at NVCC. Im due the end of july, but i would say if you have the help and support to just do it. Where did you apply too? If you get acceptepted you should talk with your OBGYN and see if he will induce you or have a scheduled c-section when you have a break. IF youre due around thanksgiving you should have a break around that time and only about a week or 2 left of clinicals and then your final. Then youll have about 5 weeks off until you start your spring semester. It goes by very fast, i remember when i was stalking allnurses.com waiting to hear if anyone had received acceptance letters this time last year and i cant believe i only have about 6 weeks left and im halfway done! We started with about 125 and we were down to about 90 people by the time last semester ended. You have to make nursing school your #1 priority or you will set yourself up for failure. Goodluck to all that applied and enjoy the summer while you can!! lol

Thanks nvccstudentnurse. I applied to Capital 1st and NVCC 2nd. Yea I have plenty of support and thats not really what im worried about. Just the timing and the amount of class Ill miss. My daughter was natural with no epideral and within a couple hours I was feeling fine and didnt need to take any medication at all so hopefully it goes that good this time around. I just wish it happens on a friday.. lol.
