Quinnipiac ABSN May 2011 Cohort

U.S.A. Connecticut

Published

Hi Everybody,

I was accepted here, and I'm hoping to connect with other students who were accepted as well as former grads who can help me decide if this is the right fit. I was also accepted to a few other schools and I want to be sure.

If you're a former student and have a few tips, some knowledge that you wish you knew before starting the program, please post! Also if you were just accepted to the cohort starting this May, say hello! I'm moving from California, and looking for a roommate. I'd love to get to know others who are too!

Hi Kelsey,

I heard that quite a few people got accepted to ABSN program from CA. I'm excited to see other CA people too! This will be a big change for me since I never been to the east coast. My friend is currently in the RN program at Mt. Saint Mary's and she's working at the UCLA Medical Center too. So when will you be move to CT?

Just wanted to add that I have worked with several QU nursing grads and they were very well prepared for their career through this program. I know one of the nursing instructors and she is just fabulous. You will also love the area the university is situated in. It is a beautiful part of Connecticut, close to New Haven. Best of luck in your schooling. As an ADN I wish I could afford the education you are about to receive. Great program!

Only a few weeks before orientation!! I will probably move back to CT in mid-may. I am staying in California as long as I can since my husband is here and I already know my way around CT. Getting excited to get started?

Congrats everyone! I am graduating from Quinnipiac Accelerated nursing, God willing in 2 weeks. All 30 of our accelerated students formed a great bond and I think you all may end up doing the same. Let me know if I can be of any help.

Hey! Congrats on finishing up in a few weeks!! Are you still alive with your soul intact? Seriously - I'd love to know...have you started your job search? Do you think it'll be easy to find something once you graduate? Do you feel you made valuable connections at your clinical sites? I'm excited to put this behind me, very happy for you that you're finishing now!!

Thank God I am alive and intact. Summer and Fall were challenging semesters and needed all I could give and maybe some more. Spring semester for the most part has been much easier.

I started applying for jobs late February. This year has been somewhat difficult for a lot of new grad nurses to land interviews and get jobs at hospitals. I managed to land a few interviews at Hartford Hosp. They will be making a decision by this week. So we shall see. However, I don't think there is any need to push that panic button since there are a number of Skilled Nursing facilities and other agencies who are in need of nurses. I have not applied to them yet, I will ,once I take care of my final exams coming up next week.

As far as making valuable connections, yes, it is essential for you to form a good relationship with your clinical instructors from all the clinicals you will be doing at QU --- reason being, you come job application --- they require your "clinical instructors" NOT your "QU professors" to write recommendation letters for you. So make sure you keep that in mind as you do your clinicals.

Also, in my case, I don't think any of the connections I made at my previous clinical sites helped me land interviews. I applied to number of hospitals and a few of them replied back for interviews ( not because I guess I knew anyone from that hospital ). But that is not to say, you shouldn't try networking!

Overall, I would say if I were an Accelerated student starting this May, I would put all my time and energy in making sure I get the grades throughout the Summer and Fall. Do whatever it takes to make it to that Spring semester. I do miss the Summer ( not all the school work ). All 30 students were mostly a tight knit group and I think the daily schedule forces you to come together as a unit.

For all of you that are in the May 2011 cohort, how is it going? I'm applying to this program for 2012 and I'm curious as to how tough it is. I know it sounds trivial, but one of my biggest concerns is not having enough time for my boyfriend, friends, and family. Are any of you having difficulty balancing school with your personal life? Do you have any free time with your work and study load?

sorry I didn't respond sooner to your inquiry about the accelerated prog - as a current student I can say that it is extremely busy! So honest reaction to your post #1 your post isn't trivial, it is so important to maintain a sense of normalcy!! With that said, having a balance in life is not something that is a reality (at least not for me) while in the program, all of your energy is dedicated to school and that is the most important thing for these 12 months (or 8 months now!). I think most all accelerated programs are set up this way. I was also worried about it, as I have a husband and a life...but life is just different now and you can always spot the light at the end of the tunnel so I think it is totally worth it. The experience and the knowledge we're gaining is really good and I wouldn't drag it out any other way. I think that by the time you're ready to start you'll have wrapped your mind around it and really be ready to jump in and roll with it! You can do it :) lemme know if you have other questions. It goes by fast! Apply!
