Am I the only one having trouble getting a response from a prospective places of employment? :uhoh21:

Are there job freezes everywhere? Is this just an "odd" time to graduate? Are new graduate nurses (RN) even considered anymore!???? Am I doing something wrong??

I am becoming so depressed over this. :( I want to start putting into practice all that I have learned in my two years. It's so frustrating to have so much to offer, and find yourself unable to GIVE. UGH.. this is so very disheartening!

YAY Congrats!!!!! Where did you two get hired?

Congrats to those that have found a job!!!

I am currently still searching. I'm frustrated and at my wits end with the whole situation of being a registered nurse and not being able to find a job. It is like a slap in the face. I'm tired of not getting called for an interview,i'm tired of the hospitals rejecting applicants via their online accounts at the hospitals applied to jobs. i'm tired of calling and emailing and getting no feedback, or if I am able to get a hold of a live person, it is clearly they are repeating some type of scripted response. I graduated in May '08. It is now '09, it is to the point I feel like an extended new graduated. I've tried to polish up my resume as best as I can. It is disappointing that I was fired from my first nursing job. It is to the point I feel like my nursing degree and license is a waste of money.

I know the economy is in a bad place, but i'm tired of seeing commercials for nurings degrees and hospitals only advertising open houses for expereinced nurses. i'm tired of HR recuriters who have never worked as a nurse in their life, or have no hospital expereince, yet they are the screeners of hiring a nurse. I'm tired of hospitals advertising on tv why when people are sick should come to their hospitals. Half the time the hospital ads are more about the doctors and the new technology the place offers. I'm tired of seeing orientation time postings of only 6-8wks. At my previous employer, I had to take an arrthymia course, it was only 2 days, 4hrs each day and then an open book test the following week. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS SITUATION. Thank goodness I had enough sense to go buy an EKG interpretations book that had nothing but rhythm strips. Yet I got disgusted looks when i asked questions in class or when I was working on the unit.

I'm tired of clincal nurse educators who don't educate, but walk around in white lab coats and when you ask them a question their response "is it will come with time." I think that response needs to be banned. Yes I know things will come with time, but what happens when things don't come in the time the employer wants it to come to you, oh yeah, you get fired like i did for not progressing fast enough. i'm tried of the lame preceptors who obviously don't want be , but are only doing it because they were asked by management or they get preceptor pay. I had a precpetor who during the shift was at the secratary station cutting out halloween cut outs. I've also had precpetors when I asked for feedback on situations ,told me not to worry about it, but yet in front of management during meetings thought that was the time to tell me how to handle situations.

I'm just TIRED to the point I'm tired of being sick and TIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Be careful with the whole deal of contacting the nurse manager directly. I did this at one place, and the NM was annoyed. I'm sort of glad I did it anyway, b/c I could sense the impatience in her tone--not to be judgmental at all--sure she could have been having a bad day--but the tone was one of real annoyance--probably about me overstepping the HR process. BTW, the HR people will often get annoyed too. Gee, I can remember the days when mangers and recruiters were thrilled to get nurses' calls. Well, at least for now, those days are over.

Hospitals don't want to admit the have what are comparatively speaking, essentially hiring freezes going on. No one will say it. Yes some jobs will be open--but not there used to be. And they don't want to pay for the ads--well that has been so for a while now. Years ago, it was like there was no limit to the ads for nurses.

Another thing, HR people do not want to launch when and where the career fairs are until the last second practically--and some of that is directed at the seniors and new-grads-to-be college campuses. That's fresh and cheaper blood, so to speak.

It's kind of amazing what's going on anymore. But it is silly to think the economic crisis is not affecting hospitals and healthcare org's. It is and will continue to do so.

"I'm tired of clincal nurse educators who don't educate, but walk around in white lab coats and when you ask them a question their response 's it will come with time.' "

Amen. Some clinical nurse educators seem like they are doing just the minimum. So many unit educators take no time with those new to the unit. They really should. If the NPs can take the time to teach and observe, etc, so can those hired specifically for that purpose.

Hospitals and units should start evaluating their nurse ed's more closely. Some are worth their weight in gold--others do their specialty classes--and spend a lot of the time carrying subjective BS to staff and NM's rather than actually being true nurse educators. This is pet peeve of mine.

I so agree, hospitals should do evaluations of their clinical nurse specialist. Just because some one has a MSN, doesn't mean they can teach. It is like being in college and having a professor who is a Ph.D, and can't teach his students, to the point out of a class of 30 students maybe 5 pass and the rest fail, and management thinks it must be the students. NO it is the professor!!!!!

I think some nurses become clinical nurse educators because they don't want to do bedside nursing anymore. Funny how that is where learning how to care for a patient takes place, is at the bedside. In any field that you work, you have to have common sense and book sense and use the two together. At my previous employer I was surprised by the nurse educators who were teaching us about the computer system. when I asked questions about documenting and they didn't know the answer I just got the response " oh you can ask someone on your unit." But yet people who are not using the system, are the ones teaching it to people who will be. Once again what is wrong with this picture. Then there are the ones who are assigned to be on the unit. They are usually the ones who have a certification in something, but also has many other roles under their belt. when I was working there was time when I had to do a dressing change and the nurse educator wanted to cme look at it too, because ahe was the wound care specialist. shockingly I started to do the dressing change and her beeper goes off after a overhead page of a cardiac arrest. She just looked at me and said I gotta go. amazingly enough she had time to pat me on the back with her wound gloved hands. oh, the patinet was on MRSA precaution, and we all know how the isolation gowns only cover the front side of the health care provider.

All i could do is think to myself WOW!!!!!!!!! and I'll so be changing my scrub top once i'm done with this wound dressing.

what makes a hospital a teaching hospital? A lot of hospitals say they are teaching hospitals due to nursing and medical schools have students going there for clinical rotations and what have you. But yet it doesn't seem like a teaching hospital when it comes to educating the staff that works there, i.e. new graduate nurses, or nurses with less than 3 -6months experience.

I really think that nursing orientations should really be evaluated by the state's board of nursing. I'm sorry a 6- 8wk orientation doesn't sit right with me, especially when you have preceptors and clinical educators who don't educate a person. Not every one learns the same and at the same time. Nursing isn't aust a job where you can hire someone and say go do the job. There is so much that has be taken into consideration. The key to working in a hospital is learning how to do things the way how the hospitals policies and procedures states. I mean every hospital has different policies and procedures for doing things. I think this is one of the biggest hurdles a new nurse has to face, especially if working in a place where one didn't do clinicals in.

Scary how this post was started back in Dec'08 and here it is May'09 and i'm still asking myself the same question "OHHH JOBS.. WHERE ARE YOU???????? It truly is heartbreaking when I file each week for unemployment and I have to answer the question to the effect of "have i enrolled in school or training?" Gee I thought getting my degree in nursing and passing my boards was enough, but clearly it is not since i don't have the "magic 1yr experience" under my belt to find a job. Once again how does one get this expereince if no one is hiring new or inexpereinced nurses at this time. It get even worst, when applying for a job and HR asks what have you been doing since your last employer? Really now, is this the type of question HR is posing now when the economy is in the current state that it is in. Trying to find a job in itself is a full-time job.

I guess it is just me, but I'm approaching the end of my rope when it comes to getting up everyday to job hunt. The reality is what it is.:banghead:

Hi -- Last week I was poking around online, looking at available jobs in the Yale-New Haven system. I noticed that they were looking for nurse externs at Bridgeport Hospital. Have you considered doing that? I don't know if they pay, but it sounds like a great way to get experience and to fill in any holes in your work history. Perhaps you can even still collect unemployment as an extern...?
