What has happened to this website

I first signed up on this site back in 2003 and remember a large number of posters. Then after a few years I kinda stopped coming on; then a few months ago I decided to return, but since my return I've noticed a few odd things that have changed, but I just want to focus on one of them.

I've noticed that many great site contributors have disappeared as though they have dropped off the face of the earth. There is no post where they say goodbye to all of their friends, or anything. To name a few...spacenurse (aka pikcledpepper), dutchgirl, tazzi, and this is just a portion of the names that come to mind straight away. That many looooooonnnnnnng time contributors don't just disappear; they don't just stop posting on a website that they have been a member of and have contributed to with great passion; and I don't recall seeing any kind of announcement on here that they are ill or have passed away, so where are they? Are they ok, because otherwise I can only assume they got banned, but their profile says they aren't banned, even though they haven't posted for months; that makes no sense.

I've participated in enough message boards to know that there is absolutely no way they've done anything on here that could nearly top what I've seen on other boards. even if they broke a TOS, surely the best solution isn't to make them disappear; their abolishment is this site's loss to be sure; but still...why would they do something to knowingly and willfully get banned on here when they have spent many years building up an online network of friends...it just doesn't make sense. Something just isn't right here; and now I'm concerned that perhaps I'll get abolished to the allnurses.com abyss after expressing my curiousity...I'll be honest, I'm a bit creeped out here

Sometimes life happens, I'll go periods where I'm very active on this site and then I'm not. Remember this forum is basically anonomyous (sp) if I were to drop dead right now, then you would just notice that I never posted anything again. Not to be morbid or sound cold, as with all websites and forums people lose interest. It happens, but I seriously doubt they've been banished from the website, more than likely they're either too busy with life, or just don't have the interest in posting.

There is always an ebb and flow to things, and allnurses.com is no different. Like said before, people get busy, real life gets in the way of online life (which is not all bad) and participation can be huge at some times, and very low at others.......

Please feel free to enjoy yourself here and we look forward to your future participation!

You said you stopped coming on after a few years...did you say goodbye or did you just vanish also? Just wondering cuz there might have been a time where people wandered what happened to you just like you are wondering what has happened to them.

PS: a couple of your examples of people who have "disappeared" actually are people who changed their usernames and still participate here.

Hi PsychRN

I had to look up my start date . . . . 2002, wow. I've seen the ebb and flow since then. People come and go. They take a break. I've taken a break before.

I see quite a few folks who were posting when I started (Tweety, Smiling, Marla (under a different name), Spacenurse (under a different name). But there are many many new people who have come through these 6 years and still more each day.

Welcome back - how has life been treating you?

Actually, your assessment is spot on. The staff will tell you "ebb and flow" changes but the real story is much deeper than that. I know for a fact there was a MASS exodus in the CRNA forum. There is alot of banning for supposedly violating the TOS. The site is HEAVILY moderated now. Anyway, I will not say more in fear of being banned. Although the CRNA forum isn't great, I still like to come and contribute some to the discussions in my boredom. About the banning, I m quiet sure you will be and I might be too, and if that's the case then this site doesn't deserve my experience and knowledge.

As with any website, when you sign up, there are terms of service. Its a way for the majority of folks to have a good time. Like at work (whether you work in nursing or not), there is a "fit". This is a huge board and without rules (TOS), it would be chaos and then few people would enjoy it.

True, very true. Still, I sometimes wonder if we aren't a little too sensitive, a little too worried that users will be offended. I yearn for a board where people can say what's on their minds a little more freely. The goal would not be to get other people upset but just to know it was ok to have an adult conversation. Soemtimes in life, we just get upset. We manage, usually, to move past it. We either stop hanging out with those we find offensive or we ignore it or we reply. But these days, everyone is so very acutely aware of political correctness. We want government or bosses or managers to protect us from every unpleasantness. Or we want to fight over the smallest offense. I think our pioneer ancestors were of hardier stock than that. Maybe not. Maybe that's largely myth. I guess there were lots of "shoot first, ask questions later" type events, if TV is to be believed. Aah, what do I know? I wasn't there. Maybe it is better to have some firmer ground rules in place.

Trouble is, some are allowed to offend and to say whatever they please, while others are not free to say much of anything. That is, the rules don't apply equally to all. I'm sure the Mods try hard to apply them fairly but they are only human.

Still, it's not my board and I know I have to follow the rules. That's life in the big city, hey? Over all, it's a great board so let's enjoy.
