Suggestion for the site policy of not giving medical advice

I know that our website has a policy on not giving out medical advice. I know that it's not the purpose of the site and can possibly have legal liability consequences for incorrect information, not knowing the patient, the fact that members are not physicians, etc.

However, at the same time, we see some tragic stories posted and it seems horrible to just post, "I'm sorry, we cannot give medical advice" followed by a locked thread. Even though it's the truth, it comes across as uncaring.

I really think that we can do better.

Sometimes when you are a layperson, researching things on the internet can be difficult, especially when you don't know what medical term to look up, what it's supposed to be called, or what direction to go. This site pops up high on Google because of all of the medical discussions that take place here...so naturally, people will come here to ask questions.

We are taught that part of our job is to educate the public....and I think it is possible to have a happy medium.

Instead of answering these posts with "we can't give medical advice" why not post some websites that "may be helpful in your quest for more information" or maybe offering suggestions on local agencies that they may look for to turn to help, support groups, just letting them know that any time you have a serious question to always get a second opinion, etc.

To me, when people have questions, all they really want is more information.

Thank you, Hopefull

Many of the staff members do try and post helpful links that the OP could benefit.

Many times, the OP has asked repeatedly for medical advice, thus a more curt closure.

Staff will and do make every effort to take in to account, the OP's feelings and often, these threads are moved to the admin help desk where we can address their concerns privately thus not "cutting them off" and allowing them to return and update us on the situation.

Again, thank you for your concern and staff will, in the future, take your suggestions into consideration.

Excellent suggestion. It's encouraging that in this day and age of "ask a nurse" our profession is respected.

I know it must be disheartening to bear your soul only to have your thread locked. It can't feel good.

Recommending other sites for medical assistance runs into other problems as well and we can't be seen as endorsing one site over the other, or advertising one site, etc. But sometimes direction is offered.

Please note that often we direct the person to the administrators forum, which is a forum the general memebership can't view so we can discuss things a bit further without making them feel like they are dropped, or we pm them or email them.

Hopeful I hear your concerns re the medical advice. Sometimes we get phonecalls on the floor from old pts, relatives etc asking for medical advice we have to say to these people you need to go and see a Doctor or present to the ER. We cannot even though we know these people give them medical advice. So how can we give nameless, faceless people on the internet any form of medical advice. We all know that people hide behind usernames on the internet-some people becoming fantasies. I am sure in this day of sue happy individuals we are only one step away from somebody somewhere citing web pages for information which was incorrect.
Just my 2 cents

I understand what you are trying to say, but even from a legal perspective, the liability does end somewhere.

Let's say that I was on my way to start a new job that was going to pay me $150,000 a year. Someone who was driving on a revoked license ran into me, cost me to miss my first day, and let's say I was working for a real jerk that decided to go on to the next candidate.

You can sue for the cost of repairing your car and rental, but you can't sue for $150,000 x every year until retirement because you lost that job...you see what I am saying?

Third party liability is hard to prove, so hard, a person would be lucky if they could find an attorney to take a case like that.

I know what you mean I was involved in a car accident because of a motor bike which crashed 200 yrds ahead. The 18 wheeler who was driving too fast and crashed into us didnt take 100% liability because of the other accident. But it just seems a lot of the time you see outrageous claims because of nurses when in reality the nurse was the end of the line.
This is an interesting debate thanks for starting it

Ya know I have thought about this from time to time but never wanted to express my opinion out of fear about permanent banishment. I can't live without allnurses.

I see both sides of the coin. As nurses we give medical and nursing advice all the time. In many settings the nurse is in charge of patient education/teaching. As long as the nurse is not attempting to medically diagnosis than I don't see much wrong with offering some suggestions.

But it gets quite complex very quickly when posting on a board. 1. The owner has every right to set the TOS. 2. A nurse really shouldn't give advice without first assessing. And the information posted is really all subjective and not objective, so a nurse shouldn't get involved except to say, you should call your doctor or his/her nurse at the office. 3. Nurses, just like doctors, specialize. So nurses should not offer advice in an area that they are not familiar in. And yet it happens.

It probably really is best that it stays a set way. I think it would be too hard for the admin team to police what is being suggested and if those suggestions are based on sound EBP.

There are other websites out there that lay people can use that offers up to date info.

I hope my post made sense... I worked this morning and have been up since 4:45 this AM.
